Now see, I always have the problem that I think something's cliched when other people think it's really original and vice-versa. Soooooo I'm not really sure if my essay's any good or not, since I tried to get across how much I love the integration of NYC but, of course, also talk about Columbia-specifics. (just don't want the adcoms to tell me to apply to NYU!) anyway, PM me if anyone has time to read a ~1500 character essay/short answer (:

Yeah, I meant character count. I don’t know if it’s changed on the supplement, but in the years when Columbia had their own app, it was 600. Maybe they’re going easier on you '15s.

yeah, it’s def 1500 characters, just checked on my supplement.
do you think the “why Columbia” is weighted pretty heavily in relation to the rest of the app? Just curious.

I think it depends what you write. If you have a great “Why Columbia?” that can compensate for weaknesses elsewhere in the app and/or tie everything together. It can really make you stand out. If you have a mediocre “Why Columbia?” you won’t necessarily seem like such a great fit for the school. It’s not the be-all, end-all of the app, but I think it’s a real opportunity that you don’t want to squander.

I’d say 600 would be a safe word count. At least, that’s how long mine was and it worked. My friends who wrote 1000 character ones had to cut theirs down.

1500… no really, you don’t have to max it all out… none of my college essays were that long last year…

I can read it if you want, I know what a good essay looks like since I’ve been accepted to top tier schools. ihelpiteachulearn@gmail.com
