@dfree124: I’m not sure if I would use toast…like, I don’t think everyone has to mention throwing toast. After all, every college tour and admissions counselor from Penn mentions the toast…I wouldn’t say that mentioning it is a unique concept to mention? Of course, I don’t want to start a debate or anything; I’m just pointing out how common it is mentioned by applicants. Thanks for the comments on Why Penn–it does sound like the same old, same old.

@EmPage21: Ok, thanks for the Facebook update. And we are bonding! Such is life when we are all applying to the same school, haha, and when it is our top choice.

Yeah, I mentioned it in passing. I definitely don’t think it’s necessary. I think it’s just reflective of their quirks and history, which most people mention.

And @hardworking- We’re bonding now, but when the decisions separate us, we won’t be the best of friends any longer :P

Maybe my dream will come true and EVERYONE will be accepted… if only.

WAAAAAIIIT, dfree, are you a highschool junior?

I visited a few weeks ago when it was homecoming weekend. I didn’t know it was when I went, but my dad and I decided to go to a game for the hell of it, considering my dad is an alumni. They were playing Princeton and we decided we’d leave midway through the 4th quarter. When they started throwing the toast at the end of the third quarter I was in disbelief. At first we didn’t know what they were throwing, then we got some helpful student to explain the reason for the toast throwing. When my dad was in Penn they could still legally drink a high ball (an alcoholic drink for those who don’t know) so they didn’t even have toast throwing when he went. I bet the adcoms love it when applicants reference the toast. In two years I want to throw my first piece of toast as a Penn student… imagine that.

And yea, I’m a Junior, but I’m not applying to Penn this year. As for the toast mentioning thing, I wouldn’t write an essay about it but it is a quirky part of Penn’s history that would show I know something about the university. Also, I actually thought the toast throwing was hilarious! If I could express how much I loved to see the toast throwing in my essay somehow, I’m sure it would go across great in the essay.

Yeah, can someone please post some key points? Especially about the “Why Penn” essay?
When the Wesleyan woman started talking I had to shut it off… I couldn’t take much more of her.

Furda said “know why you’re applying” and “apply to a school that’s good for you, not for someone else” he wants to hear YOUR reason to want to be a Quaker, not the textbook reason, or your grandmother’s reason, or even Forbe’s list reasons.

And they also said be yourself, don’t fabricate impressive stories.

@EmPage21: Well then, let us hope we are both accepted or at least deferred…are the nerves getting to me? Most definitely, yes. I love your dream anecdote.

And that’s the word I was looking for. The toast-throwing seems a bit “textbook”-y. “View guide”-y, in this case. I just looked at some of the brochures I got at Penn info sessions–all of them have a blurb about the Toast.

Again, not trying to argue/debate, but just recommending/providing a different point of view.

I totally agree, though.

I see your point hardworking, but I experienced the toast first hand without prior knowledge of it, and I actually thought it was the funniest thing ever! I know anyone could lie that they had been to a Penn football game and experienced the toast first hand, yet I legitimately loved the toast throwing. If I can express this well in my essay and make it seem genuine, I would imagine that it would be viewed positively.

@hardworking, I attached an Activities Sheet too. :P

In retrospect, I feel that my Why Penn essay wasn’t too specific. All I mentioned were CURF, the One University Policy, and Colleges Against Cancer. I guess I really screwed that one up. I hate to be a pessimist, but I am already expecting a deferral/rejection. :(

@dfree124: I think I can agree with you. Your case is special–you performed the act, and your an alumni (I believe the video mentioned detailing how your alumni background has helped you). This does.

@loldanielol: Hope we still both get in. :)

True hardworking, I even got a piece of toast from a student and threw it on the field (so I literally performed the act :p). Anyways, good luck with your application and I hope you get in!

@dfree124: Thanks! I love how you are on this forum as well (I mean that sincerely). I think it provides juniors good context for the upcoming year.

Guys, although I LOVE this thread to pieces, I really don’t think it’s helping the anticipation of waiting! It’s probably just making it worse I can barely concentrate on school work anymore because I was already totally freaking out about Penn when I started this thread anyway and that was almost a month ago, and now I’m just freaking out even more LOVE all the articles and that video that you guys are posting - and I LOVE learning about each and every one of you through your posts, but I think I’m going to sign off for a while. I can’t deal with all the stress and anticipation! It’s getting me too nervous. But I’m going to think positively and I hope things work out truly well for all of us - no matter where we end up!

Just 15 days left
Good luck everyone! Don’t stress too much!

I’m guessing posting that video was a bad idea on my behalf? …

Not really, it gave me some good insite for when I start the application process next year.

I meant that it was bad for those who already applied as it caused for more stress and anxiety.

It was their choice to watch it.

The anxiety is most definitely real! 15 days! Happy Thanksgiving, everyone.

I just got into my state school honors program! Definitely takes some stress off. Anyway, hopefully I won’t have to go there.

@loldanielol: I think those few things you mentioned were pretty specific to Penn. After all, they don’t want you to go all over the place by listing every club you want to join or every class you want to take. I also only picked two or three reasons and really elaborated each one.
There’s so much pessimism in this thread guys…seriously…and this is coming from fellow pessimist myself. Cheer up, it’s Thanksgiving =D
