Who's applying for Spring transfer 10'-Cornell?

my mistake was thinking that they were the same the first time around. the academic interest one is more of your history and how you came to want to major in your proposed major and how being at cornell will make you like it even more. the prompt itself suggests that there should be a story there. the other one, i feel, is asking why you want to leave both academically and environmentally. viola, maybe you could shed some light on this as you said you’ve already started rewriting. that’s just my feel after having been rejected and asking around. i think i’ve got the academic interest one down (meaning, what it’s asking for), but the other i’m still iffy.

and yeah, i’d take a look at them for you when you’re done if you want.

Ironicallyunure is completely right.

The two essays are entirely different. The first addresses your desire to transfer, it asks for the goals you wish to achieve and why you are not able to satisfy these at your current school. The second essay asks for reasons as to why Cornell IS the place for you to continue your education.

I’ve had a lot of trouble with this the first time around. In fact, I feel that the essays are extremely important and were a hefty part of the reason I got rejected the first time around. I think the “Why Cornell” essay should focus on the academic opportunities. Really do your research and know what programs you are going to take advantage of, etc. The “Why Transfer” essay can oversee the bigger picture, such as lack of fit at your current school (without bashing it!) and examine your academic history and aspirations.

Hope this helps. The essays are tricky, but very important.

Could someone explain the purpose of the Common Application for transfer students to me? Do I need to fill out the Common Application and the transfer application for Cornell, or is the Common Application considered the transfer application for Cornell?

You need to fill out the Common App for Cornell transfers; when filling it out, you can specify yourself as a transfer student for whatever term you’re applying for. There’s a supplement in addition to the Common App for transfer students as well, though the Common App hasn’t posted that part up yet.

viola, come on man, you know the interview is HUGELY important.

its a big part of how they gauge your personality beyond paper and stats

and yeah, the transfer essay is about why you want to continue your education (mine was easy cause i was finished at my 2 year school)

the supplement for Cornell is about why you want to attend the college. talk career plans that are relevant to that school because you want to show dedication and “loyalty” to that college.

AZUZ…good luck with everything!!!

Haha thank you! Good news is I just got a response from my Brown University ecology professor and she said she’d recommend me strongly. That’s a load off my back.

Good luck to everyone else!

Hey guys! Nice to meet everyone.

H.S. gpa - Don’t remember?.. 4.3 weighted
H.S. rank - 5/700 something
SAT - 1490/1600 2180/2400
College gpa - 3.86

Applying to Amherst, Cornell, Middlebury (if applicable), BC and Brandeis (both safety).

Thanks for your thoughts guys on the essay. It helps to get a different perspective as to how it should be answered.

great news azue! I think I may go ahead as well and start asking for recommendations while they are not too busy.

Really, BrandNew? I asked Ian about whether I’d have to do another interview, and he sort of shrugged it off, saying it was just to ‘establish a timeline.’ I honestly think it’s one of the last things they look at.

Viola…I have a really strong feeling that you will be in Cornell in the Spring!! See you there!

Violaghost, who is Ian? What is the purpose of contacting him? How does Ian help transfer applicants? I’m not applying for IRL but for a different program and would like to contact the equivalent person of ‘Ian’ for my program

Violaghost, what is this time line they are trying to set and does Ian make all the admission decisions?

Homflysmith, I can help you with this since viola explained it earlier. Ian is apparently the academic counselor of the ILR department. He conducts all transfer interviews for potential ILR students. You would want to contact Ian to find all the information you need regarding applying to the ILR program. I am sure that there are many other “Ian’s” in the other colleges as well. Call your dept. and ask to speak to the academic counselor.

ians just the main transfer counselor. hes not the only one that makes decisions on transfers, there are a lot more people, but he has a say in it.

i am curious as to what that “timeline” means, but as far as it being not that important, i dunno, i just had a feeling that my interview was the only thing that saved my butt :[ hah

Second BrandNew here. Ian is the transfer counselor - I talked about him on one of my earlier posts here. He is a very chill, down-to-earth guy. He is one of the transfer admission counselors, but he doesn’t see all the applications. For example, I know he didn’t read mine. He is available to answer all your questions about ILR transfering by phone or email. He also does all the interviews.

As to the ‘time line,’ it was the phrase Ian actually used in our conversation. The way he clarified it was as following - the interview needed to establish what you did if you took time off from school, why you want to transfer, etc… I don’t know how important it is. I don’t think it’s that big a deal, because I asked about where I’d need to do another one, and he said ‘no’ - because the time line (what I’ve been up to) had already been established.

I have no doubt that the interview also judges your personality, etc, but if it were that important, I’d assume they’d interview me again. People do change in a year.

Also, thank you, Mollena, for your support. I hope to meet all of you in the spring too. I just really hope it works out this time. I was pretty hopeful last time, and the number of spots for the spring should be far smaller.

Anyway, I am being proactive and getting involved in ‘ILR-like’ activities. I hope those will help. BrandNew, can I run my essays by you in the near future?

Brandnew are you already in the ILR program?

Good Luck Guys!!! I’m transferring in the fall so if you guys have anymore questions about the process, feel free to ask and I’ll give it my best shot.
