Who's applying to McGill for fall of 2018?

@TomSrOfBoston My parents haven’t lived in Canada for over 10 years, so they’re no longer residents. I was hoping for federal aid until I eventually become a resident. I believe that in Canada you don’t pay interest on loans until six months after you graduate, unlike the U.S. where interest accumulates as you’re in university.

Hi everyone! I’m applying to McGill for arts (& maybe arts and science? I need to inquire further about how that works). I have a 35 ACT, one 800 SAT II (USH, which is related to major) & one 750 SAT II (Math 2), >98 UW GPA, all 5’s on five AP exams thus far (taking five or six more as a senior), and should be top 1% of my grade (we find out rank at the end of September). I will be applying for merit aid and am hoping to get one of the big scholarships… you can check out my extracurriculars (for scholarship purposes) on my chances thread if you would like. And I’m from NYC!

@zorgan In the US subsidized federal loans have the interest paid by the government until 6 months after completing studies.

You need to read up on the Canadian requirements.

@FitzgeraldFan77 I do think it’s much harder to get admitted to McGill as a US/International student vs Canadian. Admission criteria is on the McGill site - “Top 6” classes for Canadian is easier (not easy) than the requirements for a US student. In my opinion it leaves some room for a B here and there for a Canadian. The more competitive majors like business are tough as a B/B+ can knock you right out of the running even if it is in an AP/IB class. Anyways, McGill is a great school and experience but I personally think the admissions hurdle is higher for a US applicant.

I wonder when the application will become online , ah i just wanna get it over with lol

The website says early September, but either way you probably won’t get a decision until they see Fall term grades. If you’re applying from U.S, they posted the minima from the last admissions cycle: https://www.mcgill.ca/applying/requirements/minima/usa.

The new SAT scores minima are quite a bit higher than the old SAT minima for the most selective programs. No wonder some American colleges are touting their increased test scores (without explaining them as McGill has done here).

Thing is @zorgan im applying over seas , and their site has no info whatsoever on the SAT score minima

@Barekk SAT/ACT is only required for American applicants.

I have a question perhaps someone here can answer. My child wants to apply to McGill and meets the requirements/prerequisites except in one place. He has a 33 on the ACT and A- or better in all the required courses except in pre-calc honors where he got a B+. This year he’ll take calculus honors. What he can’t figure out is whether he can’t even apply since he doesn’t meet the basic requirement of an A- in pre-calc or if he gets an A- or better in calculus, will that override the B+? Anyone have an idea? He’d like to apply, but doesn’t want to do so if he just doesn’t meet the qualifications. Thanks.

@curiousII I would still apply to McGill and his desired major even if he falls below the stated minimum requirement in one class. I am pretty sure McGill positions these requirements as a guide and states that they are based on the past year’s admissions pool - not necessarily this year’s. Secondly, his overall stats appear to very strong which you would hope would override a single B+. I have a D18 in a similar position. Also, the nice thing about McGill is that you can apply to 2 majors on a single application which may make it more worthwhile.

@TomSrOfBoston can probably add some insight re exceptions to the stated minimums for an otherwise strong candidate.

@curiousII I assume he is considering applying to management, life sciences or engineering as they have the highest requirements. while McGill tends to be rigid in its requirements the scenario you pose, getting an A- in calculus may override the b+ in pre-calc. I would suggest applying.

FYI it looks like McGill’s application is now open. Good luck to you all!

“What about for Canadian citizens living in U.S?”

I believe this question came up in the context of cost and financial aid. For Canadians who live in the US, depending upon details the cost of McGill is either the same as for other Canadians, or the same as for residents of Quebec (ie, even better). Either way it is a very good deal, and the currently relatively weak Canadian dollar just makes it a better deal. Also, the cost of living in Montreal is less than in many large North American cites.

When we costed this out, just over three years ago, the total cost of attendance for my daughter who is both a US citizen and also a “Canadian born abroad” was under C$20,000 per year (ie, less than $16,000 in US funds). My daughter’s stats were well over the threshold needed to get into McGill, and acceptance was quite fast, but we still were not offered any merit aid. At these prices we neither expected merit aid nor thought that it was appropriate. Both daughters were offered merit aid at some other Canadian universities but only enough to get the cost to pretty much the same ballpark.

@ShrimpBurrito the online app is still closed , where did you hear that from?

Just wondering if you create an account off your link if it takes you to the 2018 app??

Huh. Sorry if I sounded a false alarm. D may try to log in and take a look at the app this weekend. I’ll let you all know if she succeeds. Or if anyone else is able to get in, please let us know.
