I think I'm going to get an eight person one because it's on sale. Anyone know anything about tents and what are the usual requirements/standards for tents in K-ville? Is anyone else planning on bringing a tent?

Defintely not worth it to bring a tent to Duke. There's a Walmart and a Target pretty close that sell tents where most people buy them early in second semester (the tent will take up dead space first semester in your dormroom). You also don't want to buy the whole thing yourself (split it 12 ways when you get a tenting group). An eight person tent sounds about right. Just remember that during black tenting (I don't know if they'll have it again this year--its the period before second semester begins when the really hardcore tenters set up) you need 10 people at night (you are allowed to have more than one tent for your group when space permits though). Basically, wait till you get to Duke to get a tent!

good to know... thanks!

yeah, Im gonna buy it up there too, splitting the cost is a good idea too :)

"Just remember that during black tenting (I don't know if they'll have it again this year"

Why aren't they going to have or are thinking of not having black tenters next year? :(

Well last year was the first time they had black tenting. It was kind of an experiment. Seemed to be a big success because the weather was great in early January. But a lot of people (tenters and administrators and professors) complained about the whole tenting process being too hard so they keep on saying that they want to tone it down. Which stinks in my opinion. I thought tenting was a breeze and I was in a top ten tent so I tented for a while. We'll just have to wait and see what they say.

do the rules of tenting get spread around via word of mouth or will we actually receive written instructions?

Here are the tenting guidelines from last year. It was on the student government page.

Oh wow, I didn't realize black tenting was a new thing this past year. I just assumed it always happened.
Man, I hope they don't take it away... I was going to black tent next year!

i might sound retarded asking this question but what exactly is tenting for? To get tickets? To make sure ur in line and will get in in time for the game? ???

tenting is to get tickets

Yeah-- but bear in mind that this coming season, the UNC game will be probably the very last game of the season, so the entire tenting 'color' schedule will be pushed back and black tenting is up for some appropriate readjustments if necessary.

You're really going to understand the tenting rules down cold-- the line monitors make a giant deal about it around November/late October -- right after the Blue/White Scrimmage but before the first preseason games. The Head Line Monitor will come to your dorm and probably talk to you for well over an hour explaining everything and answering questions. It was hard to keep everything straight-- but ask older friends who tented.

Tenting is to get tickets, but only two games all season are designated as tenting games (though if you're in K-Ville, you'll probably go to any and every game possible, but your tent spot is only valid for two games).

I don't know whether this is true, but I heard tenters have piority to watch the undesignated games.

They don't officially have priority, but they technically do. I mean, they're already the biggest basketball fans at the school or the freshmen who need to experience Cameron and tenting and legendary Duke things, and by tenting, they've proven that they're willing to wait on lines and go to any and every basketball game. They're also right outside of Cameron anyway, so it's very easy (and almost makes sense) to jump on line very early. My roommate tented and just went to the two tenting games, but I tented and went to every single game of the season (except Maryland-- so I'm still undefeated in Cameron!)

bluestar7 basically got it down. Officially tenting gives you no advantage in getting into nontenting games. But since you're already at K-ville and into it enough, you'll be willing to wait on lines and sleep on the sidewalk for wristbands and access to other games.
