Who's chosen their own prompt and gotten accepted?

"If your prompt is original and thoughtful, then you should have little trouble writing a great essay...take a little risk and have fun."

I'm suspicious, though. Does it have to be a philosophical prompt, or can I choose a prompt that's slightly childish (but I'm sure my essay will be very kick-a55). When they say fun, do they mean "if you had one superpower what would it be?" fun, or do they mean something along the lines of "if you could say one insightful thing to George Washington, what would you say?"

Also, how strongly does Chicago take the legacy status into consideration?

My D, Class of 2011, wrote to prompt #5. I don’t remember it exactly, but I think she created the prompt to address the essay. In other words she wrote the essay first!

S1 ('12) created his own prompt, too.

I have a feeling that if legacy would really help you that much, you wouldn’t be asking the question here.

However, use your legacy as a source! They have connections to a lot of things (alumni association, alumni magazines, etc.) that will help give you a more complete picture of the University.
