So who's going to the 7 year rutgers/njms program?

I am! Rejecting Duke, Cornell, Northwestern HPME, and Johns Hopkins.

now that's some dedication

i will be seeing you this september.

Hey, it's an excellent program. In the beginning, I thought I would go to HPME or Duke - Rutgers didn't even come close to the picture. Yet, I set my priorities straight and spoke with a few medical school students and doctors. I heard the same story from all: It doesn't matter where you get your MD from as long as you just get it. Moreover, what counts is your residency hospital, which is determined mainly by your USMLE board exam and whether you are an American citizen (which I am). There are people from UMDNJ in Harvard's, Yale's, Duke's...residency hospital, and vise-versa. To add to this, most med. schools will not select their own candidates very readily into their residency hospitals...they want diversity. As an endnote, everyone I talked to told me that it was idiotic to go into so much debt. Say I go to Northwestern, I would be taking a loan of~$20,000 for the first three years of undergraduate. Not bad, as it comes out to only $60,000. However, once medical school starts, the cost (from the official Feinberg School of Medicine website) grows to around ~$54,000/year, and will increase in the time to come. Also, you should know that their is very little grant money in med. school, and thus one must take about 85% loans or so (even if you're sooooo poor that you have to sell your shoes and sacrifice a month's worth of food to take the MCAT....they know you're going to come out making money). So, after med. school is finished, I would be ~$200,000+, making the total ~$260,000 in debt! Taking into account that I want to be a surgeon, my residency would be for around 6 years, earning about $60,000 a year, which will only allow me to probably pay the bare minimum on my loan. With the interest that has accrued, it would take me some time to pay all that off. (calculate it for fun)

All in all, Northwestern, Duke, Cornell.... may be prestigious, but I don't want to be working all that time paying of a gigantic loan and still end up in the same place as I would if I went to UMDNJ. I'll take my full ride, take-home money, internships, stay close to mom and dad, and enjoy my college years, knowing that I can become a surgeon without a huge burden on my back. Take this as advice all you little people planning to apply to a joint-program next year. Unless you have a rich inherritance that can pay of your college with ease, prestige really doesn't mean much. And if you don't believe me, then find out for yourself after slaving those eight years with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of debt and still ending up in the same place as those who went to a State School.

right on brotha

The only accelerated program i applied to was this and if i got in i knew i was going here.

This one cardiac surgeon at Beth Israel, one of the best, went through Rutgers and UMDNJ.

I'll take my full ride with icing any day over -$200,000 and tears.

Rutgers-Newark is the best choice because they give you the resources of a public university and ur right next to NJMS. Plus, I'll be the first to know of the opporunities (internships, fellowships) available because we're among the best in the whole university.

For three years of undergad I'll be chilling, maintaing that GPA while everyone else will be working their heads off. You made a great choice and I hope it pays off for the both of us.

Right on!
We're like generals at Rutgers-Newark...not some second class privates or corporals at some Johns Hopkins or what not.
