Son was admitted a couple of months ago, followed by notification of receiving an invitation to the Honors College (including a scholarship plus professorial assistantship totalling around $4500/year). Also received in the last couple of days an invitation to participate in the Alumni Distinguished Scholarship competition, which could result in tuition, fees, and room and board for 4 years. Pretty excited about that possibility. His stats: GPA 4.06, ACT 36, National Merit Semi-Finalist, AP Scholar w/Honor, #1 in his class. (In-state)

I was reading about MSU’s review process, do they really recalculate GPA? It says they only use the core academic classes…Is this true?

Accepted

GPA: 3.88 unweighted
ACT: 32
SAT: 2070
EC: Piano, Tennis, Work, etc…
Essay: Good enough

I sent my app in the first week of November and heard back 2 Fridays ago

yes, they recalculate it. the way that the MSU rep who came to my school explained it is that they take only your core classes and calculate and calculate it based on the grades from those classes, leaving out all the fluff and blow off classes that often pad a lot of less than stellar students’ GPAs. they do weight it if you have honors, AP, IB, etc. core classes.
