Who's Waiting for an Envelope?

Dad2015,

Was your daughter accepted to all those VA schools you listed? Congratulations! I absolutely agree with you. Gettysburg is a wonderful school (my daughter has had a very happy four years there), but there is no way I would spend $50K a year for it - nor for any other school, including the coveted Ivies.

Congrats to the accepted class of 2015. I was in your shoes last year and will have a daughter graduating in 2013 from HS and will have to do it all over. My son is at Gettysburg Class of 2014. Was a great choice for us. After attending GAD last year he knew Gettysburg was for him.

GCMom415, you answered one of my questions on another thread about financial aid–you told me that your son received a good aid pkg. I’m happy to report that my daughter received a great pkg. also, and is 99% sure she will be attending Gettysburg. It won’t be EASY, but it should be doable. I am making her wait to see her other pkgs., for schools which are lower on her list, but unless there is a HUGE difference, she will be joining the class of 2015. And to think—she did not even want to visit the school! I was the one who dragged her there because I thought it would be a good fit for her, and she fell in love. Sometimes mom does know best.

I see that you went to GAD last year. I don’t know if you attended open house or did a tour prior to that, but I was wondering if you think it is worth going to GAD if we have already visited the school. I’m leaning towards yes so that she might meet some classmates beforehand, but the program sounds pretty similar to the open house we attended. It’s a seven hour or so drive for us, so it’s quite a ways to go if we will be doing the same stuff. (For example, they give tours, which we have already done.) What do you think?

CTinCT,
Congrats on your daughter acceptance to Gettysburg! I did visit Gettysburg one time before GAD. I really had to drag my son there. He was glad we did in the end. It was between 2 schools but he had applied to 11 in total. I felt Gettysburg was the better fit for him but I needed him to make up HIS mind. When we went to GAD there was alot of more information for us to make this decision. We were able to go to a break out seminar from the actual department of the major he was thinking of which was health science. I knew after that academically this was the place for him.
We also went to a huge expo of the clubs available to join. He wanted to play Rugby. He was able to meet with some of the other Rugby boys. During that time he said to me lets do it! We put a deposit down right there and he got his orange dot. Students get name tags that morning and the kids who have committed get an orange dot. I still have it!
Its a long drive for you. If you have any doubts I would go.
Keep me posted! If you have any questions about Freshman year, move in day, orientation ect Id be glad to help.

CTinCT,

I wanted to 2 things. I did not go to an open house. It was just a tour prior to GAD so maybe you did get more info than I did my first visit.
I also wanted to point out one more thing that helped me make a decision. I liked the fact that Gettysburg has so many housing options. Students can eventually have apartment and townhouse type housing. The housing is Gettysburg owned property so you never have to deal with a landlord and pay out of pocket for rent. Its in your financial package cause it is considered college housing. I was worried that some colleges many students lived off campus junior and senior year and end up paying rent. Just some info. LOL

Thanks for the info. I did not know about the housing—good to know. The only thing they told us was that all freshmen live together based on their first year seminar. One thing that we would like to see is the inside of a dorm, because they did not show us one on our tour.

We are probably going to go to the GAD just to take one more look, even though d is sure she wants to atteng Gburg. For such an important decision, I want to be on the safe side.
According to mapping sites, it should only have taken us 5.25 hours to get there. We ran into horrendous traffic twice, and now that I think about it, it did take us a bit less time to get home than to get there.

We also have to decide if we want to miss a day of work/school to go to the scholars thing on Friday before GAD. I think we will wait for more info before deciding on that. I can’t imagine everyone will be able to attend due to distances and school/work schedules. Off to make at least one night hotel reservation!

I live on Long Island usually takes about 4 hours. If you decide on Gettysburg book parents weekend right away. I have already booked mine. The Gettysburg Travelodge is in the part of town close to the battlefields near the ghost tours and nice to stay because you can walk in town and resturants. I usually stay there or the Gettysburg Hotel which ever has a better deal.
Yes the freshman dorm together. I was able to see a dorm room on GAD. Its pretty standard but they do supply you with a micro- fridge.
Move in Day is great! The students help you up with all your things. Takes no time at all.
Good luck on GAD… I hope to get down to Gettys next weekend or maybe GAD to see my son play Rugby.

fsceagle: My daughter also got the Abraham Lincoln Scholarship and is now deciding between Gettysburg and Bucknell.

Congrats Jem!

Congrats to all and good luck!

You can compare your academics to the class profiles listed on the Gettysburg College website. They appear well within the normal acceptance window.

What few entering freshmen (and their parents!) fail to realize is there are few if any “scholarships” at top tier colleges. Financial need is literally the sole criteria for aid. It’s a brutal fact that if your parent’s income is high enough that they can pay your tuition, top tier colleges will expect them to pay full price. If there’s need, however, there is financial aid available.

It’s all about FAFSA.
