Who's Who...is "semifinalist" a scam too?

My history teacher recommended me for who's who last year...

and I just sent in the student information for fun b/c it only costed me 39cents...

anyway, today, I got this postcard that said I was semifinalist for who's who.

I know this whole thing is a BIG SCAM, and that people with like 0 brain cells

get invited too....

but does the "semifinalist" consist of like, half a million people, too?

did any of you get this "congratz...semifinalist!" postcards?

.....i'm finishing college apps now, and I was wondering if I should put in that

i'm a semifinalist for who's who....or would college admission ppl think i'm naive retard?

thanxxx:D

I've been told by my son's guidance couselor that it's useless. Not exactly a scam (as far as I know) but useless.

But my son won. Not every counselor/teacher/school will give a glowing recommendation for your child. I personally believe that this scholarship is based more on recommendations than on scores and grades. This is more valuable than the NMFS that kid got but not able to use. Thus Who's Who was worth more in pure $ to him. For the amount of effort that he put into this application (10 minutes) vs the essays and applications of other programs. it was time well invested. Scam to you, A Windfall to us. We look for opportunities for minimal effort...

you say that your son spent a short time on the form, but the form that I got as semifinalist requires personal statement. I know that they used to charge $5 for applying, so their policy may have changed too.
I know for a fact that they give scholarship to a certain number of applicants, but since they send the “you were recommended” form to so many students, I simply want to know what being a semifinalist means, and if a lot of people get nominated for it, too.

Doesn't mean much....

Another filtering process. How many essays did you write for just one of the schools that you are applying? So can you take one of your essays and cobble together a personal statement, afterall a scholarship should go to someone who has conviction rather than to someone who is wishywashy?

How about the Coke Cola scholarships. How many filters?
