Why academic honor societies?

Every field/major seems to have its own academic honor society. For example, I just got an invitation to join the Nu Rho Psi Honor Society for neuroscience. (Isn't their naming creative?)
My question is: are these actually worth anything or in any way meaningful? It's based solely on having gotten certain grades and being a neuroscience major. Couldn't graduate schools or potential employers figure such things out just from my GPA or transcript? What's the point of paying $50 to be a part of this?

Many years ago when I was in college I was nominated for Sigma Xi (science honor society) - I figured it was an honor so I paid the dues and the cost of the induction dinner and put it on my resume. Today there seems to be many of these honor societies so you may want to pick and choose which ones you join.
