Why are "hipsters" elitist?

Hey -- Lets bash typical conformity because we dont fit the mold. We will create a new style and then conform to that instead. Yay for emo glasses! The beauty is since we changed the meaning of "cool", we can claim to be better than others. What a bunch of sheep they are! To add some spice, we will listen to obscure music to get a feeling of importance and another opportunity to look down on others!! Forget social awkardness and poor genetics. We wont define cool through good-looks or athletic ability, "cool" will be reading postmodernism in coffee shops!

worst thread ever

Nah, there have been worse.

lol @ hipsters

You can't be a hipster without being elitest. It's part of the definition.

I mean, you don't have to like everything mainstream or hate everyting mainstream. You can pick and choose.

It's one thing if a jock is elitist (he has athletic ability, etc). But there are absolutely no barriers to entry to becoming a hipster. Any loser can buy an Ipod and fill it with bands no one has heard of. The kids are so ridiculous.

I took a honors multimedia class last fall, and was one of only 2 engineers in it. Amazing class and amazing classmates, but we had some hard-core hipsters. Telling us what's art and what isn't, wearing those weird hats, not being able to grow a beard and not shaving.

I had to give a presentation about what is and isn't art one day, so for fun I put in some of my mom's work. She's a nationally-recognized engraver, and some of her best business comes from engraving guns (large, valuable, metal object. You can't make a ring or a buckle the size of a rifle after all). I started with a close up shot so you couldn't tell it was a gun, and the hipster's loved it, said it was great art. Went to a full view, and the hated it and thought I was a terrible person for showing it.

yeah, that sounds about right.

@bmanbs2

Hilarious!

Nothing in your snarky definition points to elitism though...

"worst thread ever"

Not until AA and/or the morality of drinking come up. There's time though.

the first post reminds me of say anything's admit it.

hopefully at least a couple people have heard it so i won't be called a hipster, cause that would be ironic.

..lawl

LOLOLOLOL
stupid hipsters.

The saying of being above conformity is lame. hipsters conform to each other and there is no leader among. If they were real cool, they get some leadership skills, and branch out on their own two feet.

I know some hipster-like people who don't necessarily reject mainstream. They dress "hipster" one day and prep the next. I know a "hipster" who likes Harry Potter. Something about the hipster style has such sexy appeal. Maybe it's because the hipster boys I know kiss other boys sometimes... such a tease. They are so adorable.

Reminds me of "The Hipster Handbook". I read it and the first thing I thought was "I totally know some people like this!".

i think it is definitely a pointless thread. and .. let me elaborate

hipster is damn hard to define, esp in 21st century (same thing goes for punk, metal, goth, and anything underground)

Does one become a hipster if s/he dresses like one? Does one become a hipster if s/he has obscure underground music? I think the correct answer should be no. no.
at least in my book, one does not suddenly become a punk just because he ripped off his jeans and started wearing [insert classic punk band] tshirt. if someone does that for other eyes, don't we call them posers?
(saying one's a hipster one day and a prep a day after... obvisouly he's not a hipster.) im just saying that it's all in one's head not in his/her fashion style

I mean myself isnt a hipster. i personally dont have money to go buy new clothes. but ive seen some real chill hipsters who dont act like elitists but down-to-earth another-human-being with a slightly tilted point of view (and oh yeah .. weird fashion style). that, i think, is pretty awesome.

Q: How many hipsters does it take to change a light bulb?

A: You mean you DON'T know???

ahhhhahahah @eddyx77

its a shame the kids dont realize that growing up means growing OUT of the stupid labels.

(who am i to talk? im "ghetto prep" aka neon polos, coach, and BLING) hah.

oh btw whooo was that girl who thought guys kissing other guys is "cute"? there are slim pickings for guys as it is....i dont think its cute when they turn on us and start taking from our pile o boys.
