Couple of you have made reference to hipsters. In my experience, every organization in the world has factions of sorts. And the question is, like how? When you say “hipsters” at Brown, what do you mean?

Another way of putting the question is, if there are people who consider themselves to be at the top of the Brown social structure, who are they? I believe Brown is more egalitarian in this way than many other places, but no place in the world is fully egalitarian.

If someone keeps on talking about having better music taste/style, they're the jerk hipsters. Just tell them to stop being pretentious. And like ilovebagels said, "no self-respecting hipster would ever admit to being a hipster."

Signs that someone's a hipster:
The person in question wears vintage clothes.
The person listens to the Arcade Fire, Radiohead, Beirut, and The National
Any others? I'm too tired to think right now.

i think you are too worried about people not talking to certain groups of people or people being stuck up. this isn't high school. people talk to anyone, you'll find all sorts of people to socialize with, don't sweat it.

To say that Brown is cliquey, though, would give the wrong impression.

The social structure is that whoever you like to spend time thinks they're doing the most fun thing at a given moment. That's why they chose to do that amongst the million options they have.
