I wanted to revisit this supplement question. Alums - do you have any advice on distinguishing yourself from the thousands of other answers to this prompt that admissions officers will read? I’ve heard the admissions office can get fed up with the two most common answers (“open curriculum” and “diversity”), but Brown’s socially and intellectually diverse atmosphere really is the main factor drawing me to the university…

I am not a member of the Admissions Office, so I cannot speak with authority. But I do know that the Admissions Office knows all about Brown. Suggestion is to write about “Why Me”. If You really are a fit for Brown they will be smart enough to see that…whether you draw that conclusion explicitly in your essay or not

I’ve answered this question, so search this thread. I highly recommend doing some intense research on the Brown website and other sources in order to write an answer that is specific to you.

One approach could be to read Brown’s “Building on Distinction” plan which clearly states what sets Brown apart from it’s peers. Demonstrate how your own background, ambitions and academic & extracurricular interests resonate and can add-value to Brown’s near to medium term vision. Be articulate, imaginative, confident and bold in expressing your answers and show Brown who you really are as a person. Try and capture both breadth and depth in your response, which may be bullet points or paragraphed as long as they are meaningful and show your potential to leverage Brown’s strengths to become something more.

It’s not the only approach, of course, but all of my kids did this type of background research for their “Why College” essays and each got in to a top 10 rated school of their choice. Besides, you’ll also be sure that Brown is where you want to go and moreover, what you want to get out of Brown once you’re there.
