Why did you all chose on planning to major in some business field?

Is "business" a major or are there certain branches that one majors in. Ex: accounting

What can you do with a business major?

I chose to major in business because I looked at what I was good at and what I liked. I’ve always been very good at and interested in strategy games, which often involved the management of money or other resources and units of some kind. I took some personality tests to help me define my personality as well and there are plenty of tests that suggest careers for you, though you should obviously take any kind of test result with a grain of salt. Everything seemed to point to finance for me and I was definitely interested, so I went ahead and majored in it and accounting is my minor because it’s simply so useful for any kind of finance job, or really any business role in general.

Business is NOT a major at my university (though I am not familiar with every single university, I would be highly suspicious of one that offered “business” as a major.) At my university you get a BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) degree with a major in a specific facet of business. The majors themselves include finance, accounting, marketing, management, MIS, Supply Chain Management, International Business and sometimes others depending on your university. There are also “tracks” for a lot of these. For example, a finance department might offer a major in finance with tracks in corporate finance, investment management, real estate and others. The more you specialize for a job, the better your chances are for employment, and this is just another way to specialize your skills for your goals and interests.

You can do a whole lot with a business degree. I’m not going to list out fields or anything because that is absolutely vast covering everything from energy finance to human resources to product placement, but the investment banking and consulting fields are the most competitive.

Thanks for your post, skittles.

I know I could look it up, but what exactly does an investment banker do and what do consulting field people do?

Investment banking sounds nice.

Investment bankers basically trade government securities and such. It is a very sttressful job, with long hours, but the pay is great. Usually, investment bankers are recruited from top notch universities like Wharton and such.
