If you’ve applied to Brown this year (or already are there), and if it was your first choice, what made you choose it?

Well, Brown isn’t exactly my first choice, but it’s definitely high on my list. I really love how the students seem so genuinely passionate about everything they do, and so interested in learning for its own sake. I like how the university treats its students like adults and has a long history of progressivism and forward-thinking approaches to education. In addition, everyone I’ve ever met from Brown absolutely loves it. My interviewer also made a great impression on me.

I chose to attend Brown (early decision) because of the Program in Liberal Medical Education and lower amount of stress in regards to double concentrating in what I’m studying (Human Biology and Theatre Arts). Double majoring can be a pretty stressful experience, but it’s something very common and manageable at Brown most of the time. The school itself is pretty calm/relaxed and not super cutthroat, which just makes the campus a more pleasant atmosphere.

Additionally, the area isn’t too shabby. It’s a perfect medium between a large urban setting (Columbia, NYU) and a pretty rural or small suburban area (Cornell, Dartmouth). It’s definitely got a good college vibe and enough school spirit to make it seem like the classic college experience… but you’ll find that most of your time is spent on the hill rather than exploring Providence and that is what I initially expected anyway.

Looking back on my first semester, I would say that the university met most of the academic and social expectations I had, but there will always be problems. I would definitely say that the best quality was the enthusiasm and availability of professors/lecturers/TAs and various extracurricular activities on campus to get you involved.
