Why do adcoms want to know what you've done w/ your earnings?

Just wondering, on the University of California apps one question after work experience was about what I've done with those earnings. I answered truthfully saying I spend most of it on books and musical instruments (bought myself a fancy new guitar just recently :D) while a portion goes towards a savings fund for me to use during and after college.

It just seemed like an unusual question to be asked on a college application.

Does anyone know what the purpose of it is? I can imagine a number of applicants falsifying what they spend it on to make them sound more altruistic lmao :P

I guess they want to know how you value a fancy new guitar vs. A college education. The guitar probably is no issue if you’re not asking for aid.

What you do with your money says a lot about your interests and your priorities in life.
