“I’m surprised no one mentioned genetics as a possible factor.”

Intelligence is genetic obviously. The OP brought up the fact that Asians and Jews seem to be of a higher social class, which isn’t genetic. It is influenced by IQ which is genetic, and that was brought up by many.

I agree with feuxfollets’ second point. Honestly, concerning the claims that sports boost brain activity, that might be true but I’m not really sure how much merit that holds, because a lot of Asian/Indian kids actually play sports (some are even heavily involved) but are intelligent regardless, and would still perform at the same academic level if they did not participate in sports. I don’t think sports are the real problem; it is the involvement, because education essentially becomes an afterthought once one is too involved with sports. I think that is what has happened in the American culture.

Because they sell their heart and soul for their work. Or at least that’s true of many Japanese. We Americans do worse because we put our quality of life over getting things done more often.

Asians, even in Asia, sees greater achievement amongst immigrants than the locals. The top students in local schools in Singapore are usually immigrants from other countries. Perhaps success can be attributed to passion to do well, humility to do what the teacher wants, and inter-personal support amongst the new people in our life.

I believe, no matter in America or Singapore, the running theme for our societies is meritocracy, those who are able and willing to work hard will succeed.

Because us asians get chained to a math book and aren’t allowed to talk until we know calculus. That is why we speak too fast and we don’t interact with americans because americans bomb our country with oil.

Ok you should realize that last paragraph was a joke.

I’m Asian and my parents come from a poor country so they put me on the guilt road saying they don’t want me to look like them and I don’t want to look like them so I work harder and maybe some day I don’t get the whip.

As for Jews,
The only Jews I know are doctors and their children somehow magically do well. Maybe they are just plain smart.

My parents have been telling me since I was a kid, to work hard because I am so stupid, not as talented as other people; to be materialistic and not dreamy because family’s not well-to-do, and I can’t achieve a thing if I’ve no material comforts; to cherish learning more than athletic activities because athletes are stupid(obvious quite absurd); live a disciplined and principled life because it is good, and it shows devotion.
I remember in childhood the best thing my parents liked me to do was reading. that’s why I get so bookish.

anyway, I think American Whites live happier lives than Asians do.

I agree with you, dawncoming. I wished I will just do my best in something I love and not working hard in the things I cannot possibly be truly competent and talented in.

I’m Asian, but I think I have a slightly different point of view than most. I live in Hawaii, and my high school is somewhere between 80-90% Asian. And although I haven’t gone to a school with a white majority, it seems to me like my school is pretty typical of a small private school regardless of ethnic makeup. We have the smart ones, the artsy ones, the slackers, the jocks, etc. In my eyes, the “do your best or no rice for you” mentality disappeared with our parents’ or grandparents’ time. The majority of the Asians in Hawaii are descendants of plantation workers who obviously knew what it was to work hard, but that was generations ago.

I think the majority of the Asians who are getting ahead are those who have recently arrived, not those who have been here for a long time. For example, my professor at the university I’m taking dual enrollment classes from is Korean from Korea. He was recently talking about how “Koreans come to the US to get Ph.D.s, if they don’t get one, they don’t ever go home.” So, it’s definitely not the genes (or, rather, the genes that determine the color of your skin), it’s the upbringing.

Ah yes, you Americans aren’t as successful because you place your priorities elsewhere. Do you know how stupid you sound?

My parents havn’t ever scrutinized my grades and their involvement in my academics has progressively decreased as I got older. Many Asians/Jews have similarly lax parents, explain why they are still “smarter” or more “successful” than you. At the moment, you just sound bitter.
