Im just wondering....I'm an american living in Germany right now and I visited the states over winter break, to visit my future school, Lehigh University. And wow being in the states again opened my eyes....why do americans dress so badly? Their clothes seem to be always too big for them and its always just jeans and a t-shirt...sweat pants and sweatshirt...flip flops shorts and t-shirt...why??????

Lehigh - provincialism

New York and parts of Cali are different in that regard.

Couldn’t you have stayed in Germany for engineering?

Lehigh is in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania, a relatively rural state to begin with (take it from someone who lives in PA.) Don’t expect anyone there to dress particularly well.

yeah i could have however my entire family is in the states and there are many good internship opportunities for me. plus i want to bring the good style back!

well lehigh brings in a lot of people from north jersey and new york, some wealthier kids. and i mean its a school that costs 50,000 dollars a year so its not bums going there. but i didnt mena at lehigh specifically, i mean americans in general (guys) just dont dress well.

it’s not even that Americans dress poorly compared to everyone, but Europeans are much more fashion-concious because most of the fashion centers - Paris, Milan, whatever - are in Europe - same reason people in NYC and LA are more fashion concious than most americans…visit South America, Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada…you’ll see most people in general are casual compared to Europeans. designer european clothes are a luxury for most people globally…not that you have to buy expensive stuff to look good.

we’re a pretty casual laid-back people imo…idk, I feel most comfortable in jeans and a simple blouse/top and that’s what I generally wear. people usually get more dressed up for going out at night, but most students dress pretty casually for class.

yeah alix i agree with you completely. europeans are much more fashion conscious. idk i guess i just wish that we americans were a bit more fashion conscious. i mean its not that hard to throw on a polo and a sweater or atleast buy jeans that fit nicely. but i agree with your statements.

Man, I should start wearing socks with my sandals, so I could be as fashionable as those Germans.

hhhiilllarrriiooouusss man. racin i assume you dont dress well…haha and im not even german. but sometimes i wish i was since almost everyone hates americans right now

This reminds me of an article I read a while back:
[George F. Will - America’s Bad Jeans - washingtonpost.com](http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/04/15/AR2009041502861.html)

I’m not going to get on my high horse or anything by saying that I try to change things up on a regular basis.

… but that’s mostly because I apparently come from the [Douglas Yancey Funnie](<a href=“Doug | Retro Junk”>Doug | Retro Junk) school of clothing philosophy - I do have a lot of the same kind of shirt with different plaid designs, for example. I randomly wear ‘nicer’ clothes.

I don’t know what high horse those people have planted you on, but feel free to climb down from it at any time.

im not on any high horse plattsburgh, but i dont understand why americans in general dont dress better. i mean sure baggy jeans and a sweatshirt thats too big is comfty, but it looks stupid after a while and many other countries make fun of americans for the way they dress.

Who cares? It isn’t as if there aren’t reason to make fun of Europeans, too. I am not suggesting Europe needs to become more American for me, am I?

Realistically, the average American family is unlikely to have the money to dress like Victoria Beckham nor the desire to do so. I suspect they’re probably a little more worried about where their next meal is coming from and how they’re going to pay to keep the lights on, than looking cute so that a bunch of superficial snobs don’t make fun of them.

Provided everyone is wearing clothes and aren’t flashing an ass or a butt cheek, then it really shouldn’t be of your concern unless you’re volunteering to jazz up the American wardrobe.

well i assume you dont live in a foreign country and dont heard the criticism everyday haha. the kids are nice here, i mean it just gets annoying when americans get insulted alll thee timmee. i mean dont get me wrong i love americans. i mean i prefer their personalities and manners and everyday conventions compared to germans, at least. im just saying i wish that americans would dress better. and of course there are reasons to make fun of europeans, many of them.

I’m starting to see trends in fashion shift in the States, I think Americans do dress well depending on where you are, especially if you live in L.A. or NY. There are huge trends that start in both places and influence the world. But dress how you want and don’t let someone say how you should or shouldn’t.

well it is of my concern since i will be living in america for a good remainder of my life. no one said you had to dress like victoria beckham…idk where that came from…and obviously if you’re worrying about where your next meal is coming from then OBVIOUSLY im not addressing you…

and who said anything about impressing superficial snobbs…im not a superficial snob but id prefer not to see ****ty dressers everywhere, or get made fun of when i pop my collar. idk man…just annoying i guess.

I was going to also comment on this but by judging from your last response, you don’t seem that bright.

who are you to say im not that bright. im just addressing the fact that a good amount of americans, not all, in my opinion, dress quite poorly. dont judge me or my intelligence, you dont even know me

You seem like idiot. I’m just sharing my opinion, maybe that’s something you took from living in Germany. broad generalizations of an entire country of millions, what fun!
