Why do Asain males have it bad?

As an Asian male (and current senior), I find the things people say about college admissions frankly baffling. Why do Asian males get the bad rep? Why are admissions supposedly "harder" on us? Do Asian males simply have a poor performance in secondary school? Are there too many of us on college campuses? Are there too many of us applying to college? Or is there some confounding variable that I'm missing...? Perhaps this is all a badly-perpetuated myth, and Asian males are just sore about rejection so they post more threads about it on CC.

May someone enlighten me?

Asians statistically score higher in most subjects than other races, so that means they expect more from an Asian than an African American or Latino who do not fare so well on tests.

There are a lot of opinions about this. There are several possibilities:

 1. It’s a myth.
 2. It’s because US colleges don’t want “too many” Asians and discriminate to keep their numbers down.
 3. Selective colleges are looking to fill a class with students with a wide variety of skills and interests–they want athletes, English majors, singers, debaters, you name it. However, there are a lot of Asian students with very similar interests and activities (the math-loving, tennis-playing, Kumon-tutoring Asian student is not just a stereotype), and this means that Asians are often competing against each other for a narrower niche. They may also be geographically concentrated, and are hurt by colleges’ desire for geographical diversity.

I don’t know which is the true answer–there may be some truth to all of them. But which one can you, personally, do something about?

I KNOW I should just leave this thread alone, but I can’t resist. First, I’d like to suggest you try the latest version of the race FAQ thread.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1366406-race-college-admission-faq-discussion-10-a.html

Then I’d like to ask you to do a little research OFF of CC. This is a chances sub-forum. so what you want to do, is compare your “chances” (or likelihood ), as an Asian male, of getting into and going to college, compared to other groups. Find out if your chances are better or worse. You may want to also research whether your chances of going to a PARTICULAR college are better or worse. That is a lot trickier, in terms of your individual chances, but you can at least see if there is a significant population of Asian males at a given school. This does not address the question of admissions being “harder”, only fleshing out if " Asian males have it bad", and your “chances” of going to a very good college.

Shrinkrap is right - This topic should be discussed in the FAQ thread.
