Why do college ask where else I applied?

Especially on the common app;
College ask where I applied, why?
Is it ok to lie about it and just name off some community colleges?
So that it will be like a reverse psycology: if they see bad schools that I applied to - they might think their school is my top pick?

What should I do?
I'm trying to get into Boston U, should I be honest about it or? B/c I realy want to up my chance of getting in there.

Actually, my college counselor told me to not answer any of those questions on any of the applications because there was a huge fuss about it but it was too late to take the questions off.

No, it is not okay to lie. Why would you ask a question like that?

Don't do it if it's optional, but if they ask for it just name the schools you are applying to.

If they think you can get into better schools that are probably higher on your list, they might waitlist you instead of accepting.

think of it like this. there are going to be a couple different types of people that apply to BU: extremely qualified, qualified, and not qualified. the extremely qualified applicants are going to see BU as a 'target' or 'safety' school (with like Yale/Stanford as reach schools), and the qualified applicants are going to see BU as a top choice, with maybe some state university as a safety school.

if BU accepts all the extremely qualified students (that doesn't see BU as a top choice), then that would leave less room for the qualified applicants (who really want to get into BU). say that the extremely qualified applicants get into their top choice of Yale or Stanford, then they're more likely going to reject BU's acceptance VERSUS qualified applicants that will probably pick BU if accepted. so to balance this, BU wants to see where you rank them in terms of the other schools you are applying to.

and no, i do not think it would be a wise choice to lie about the colleges you have applied to.

They worry that you use them as a safety. My daughter put colleges of the similar ranks to the ones that she applied.

I'm in a similar situation with a safety I'm applying to.
I put all my safetys and matches on the lists but not my reaches. I don't want it to seem totally unrealistic but I also don't want to make it extremely obvious that it's a safety. I'm not saying lie about everything but I don't see anything wrong with not putting down every single college you're applying to--people's lists are still changing, even now.

So do you think I should list that I am applying to community colleges? To make it seem more so that they are a priority and first choice to me- which they realy are
?

Haha, nobody needs to apply to community college. You just show up and enroll. They won't beleive you.

So what would be some good colleges to list for applying to BU?
hofstra? etc?

Put some local school to where you are applying. Like some state schools. If you can't think of one, Northeastern University in Boston is a good one to put. It has a bit lower rank than BU.
