Apologies-- I posted this in the Caltech, MIT and Stanford threads too...
I'd like parents' inputs...mine are ready to have me institutionalized....help!

I got senioritus...that's b/c I got into Caltech and MIT ED and now hanging waiting to hear from Stanford.

My parents think I'm a slug and threaten to send me to my financial safety rather than pay the big bucks at MIT or Caltech b/c they swear my slug-ness will spill over to my freshman year. They even suggested I get professional help-- said I have depression. I'm just bored and prefer to play video games and relax until I start college...what is wrong with that???

I'm pulling Bs now..and I even failed PE second quarter...HA HA HA...but thankfully it averages in and I will not need to repeat / make up the quarter...Guess I'll put on my shorts for now on...get a C then...

Seriously--- any advice...should it matter if I get good grades? Should I try to get rid of my affliction!
I had straight As first quarter when ED mattered...straight Bs (except Calc-- A+) in second quarter ...and hope to pull off Bs for the year so I don't risk being rescinded.....no Cs yet...but it is TEMPTING to do nothing. None of these schools are going to give me AP credit anyways-- so that's pointless too...I enjoy my AP classes...the other classes required to graduate are painfull.... I still have my ECs...but once home...I have no interest is stupid HS homework and assignments.

Parents- honestly-- those of you who watched your seniors with the same- aren't they all doing fine now and don't you regret all the nagging you did....??

YUP, have seen one student get a rescind letter at our HS. And there is just the worry that senioritis turns into being a cocky freshman who then gets C’s or worse the first semester in college.

I mean, what is the big deal, right? C’s as a freshman mean you have three more years to pull up the GPA, dude. Like, don’t sweat it…yeah, right.

You can seach the boards and read about the high achieving students who went off to tier one schools and were on academic probation after the first semester, or even flunked out and were asked to leave.

Your parents are acting like adults, like parents. They are not acting like teenagers. I have NO regrets acting like a parent.

The day the child realizes that all adults are imperfect, he becomes an adolescent; the day he forgives them, he becomes an adult…the day the child forgives himself, he becomes wise. Alden Nowlen.

You worked hard UNTIL you got accepted to Caltech and MIT, once you were accepted, you’ve slacked off. So, why wouldn’t your parents think that while you’re at one of these pricey schools you won’t do just as much as necessary in order to stay there…even if that means graduating with a so-so GPA.

I got senioritus…that’s b/c I got into Caltech and MIT ED and now hanging waiting to hear from Stanford.

BTW…if you accepted to MIT ED, then how come you didn’t have to rescind your other apps? Or, does MIT have different rules or was it really EA???

Are your parents also going to be playing video games and relax until you start college? In our home, everyone works hard at their job, be it a paid one or not. It’s disrespectful to be lazy when the people footing your bills are not.

Plus, getting out of the habit of serious academics is not a good idea for any college student, especially the ones going to the most difficult colleges.

Also- you want to have the best knowledge base going into college- learn the HS material now. It shouldn’t take that much effort if you’re the caliber of those schools.

senioritus,
I know of a really smart girl who went to a very competitive high school, got into Yale, got a serious case of senioritus, started Yale and realized that she had pretty much forgotten how to study because she hadn’t done it in so long! It hurt her overall GPA and later affected her med school admissions. Try to get back into gear-everything doesn’t have to be perfect, but don’t let everything slide big time.

@Youdon’tsay
DITTO_- Well said! Yes, that’s it…leave please!

I once read an editorial in the NY times about students who procrastinated doing their applications…one parent wrote …I just reminded my child that if they don’t get submitted, they would be stuck with me another year!

I love my kid too- but cannot wait to be an empty nest!

MIT costs the same as a really nice new car every year.

I’d rather give my kid a college education than get a really nice new car every year.

But I’d rather get a really nice new car every year than bankroll some slacker.

If you go to MIT, CalTech or Stanford, you’ll be asking your parents to make a huge commitment to launching you into adulthood. But “bored,” “burned out,” and “swine flu” just don’t sound like very adult excuses for falling grades across the board.

Where did I say I failed grades across the board?

I got 2 Bs and 2 As…that’s my senioritis (happy everyone I took the “u” out)…and was commenting that if I did little of the homework I might pull a C the next quarter…and said so what…
I was actually more alarmed by my parents’ reaction- -they don’t see me doing homework 4-5 hours a night anymore and think there’s something wrong with me…

Such cold comments in general… wow…maybe you’re all jealous that your child didn’t get into these caliber schools…

I just wanted to know what’s wrong with not pulling straight As.

The only class I failed was PE-- I had no time to make up all the missed classes and the teacher didn’t take too kindly… big deal…no GPA impact…and no one will ever see the F anyways - it’s not on my mid year transcript…I just thought it was pretty funny.

Slacker-- no not at all…just not doing my coloring homework …
