Why do people sleep on beds?

whatever. i never really got out of the habit of sleeping on the floor from my years in japan.

so damn comfy. kinda ignore my bed's existance.

We sleep on beds because sleeping on the floor would have some effect on your spine and neck.

its been proven that sleeping on the floor is better for your back in the long run. it keeps your spine well-structured.

Hahahahahahaha.

Anyways, can anyone cite research please?

Another tradition

oral presentations.

I hate oral presentations.

L'Internet shall replace them!!!

The Internet allows access to information without relying on oral presentations. It allows them to be videotaped. Why RESTRICT access to vital information by keeping them to oral presentations, where one can't even go only to the most interesting info? But no one does that! It's irritating! Why monopolize vital information to places where you have to be present to actually attend?!?!?!

As the book "Survival Skills for Scientists demonstrates, oral presentations are important to science. Science is choke full of traditions.

We need a revolution... But that will kill the Internet too.

And Communism failed before the Internet. What of after the Internet? Eh?

VIVE LA REVOLUTION!!!! OVERTHROW THE STATUS QUO

P.h.D: "A German invention, suitable for second-rate mathematicians and foreigners." - G.H. Hardy

sighs

Let's rebel against the bureaucrats who eat meat, force their kids to attend school, sleep on beds, and confine knowledge to oral presentations!!!

Lol, that sounds so funny. :p

What about the bizarre, somewhat barbaric practice of drinking the milk of another species?

I use to sleep with my mattress on the floor. Its better if your prone to falling out of bed.

Those countries in which people sleep on matresses have their floor made of wood. Other countries which have granite floors (or sth like that) have people sleeping on bed because such floor can make sleeping on the matress very cold (however thick your matress is) and make the matress damp, too. Sleeping on a wooden, on the other hand, is warm and smooth enough even without a matress.
:D I think so....:D

It's a lot easier for people with joint problems or back issues to get in and out of bed when it's raised than when it's just a mattress on the ground. Plus, I think there's some sort of comfort in the fact that we're higher up than the ground, where bugs and dirt dwell. I realize that bugs and dirt can both also be found on/in beds...but we just generally feel a lot safer on beds that are raised. For me, it's not so much tradition as something we've found that works well and that we're choosing to stick with because we haven't found anything that works better!

I like beds. =]

Just wait a few years, you'll change your mind about the floor. It's called aging. Cavemen slept on the dirt floors of caves and they lived to be what 25? Gravity, nobody escapes it.

Personally I still use a waterbed. best sleep ever.

does anyone have a sleep number bed?

^^^^I wish!

If you think about it, there are a lot of silly things that we do because of tradition or because of stupid society. Like, why do we wear clothes when it's a million degrees outside? Why do we make our beds every morning when we're just going to unmake them 12 hours later? Why do we shower everyday if we're not dirty? Why is it "gross" to wear something twice in a week if it doesn't stink or harbor bacteria? Why do women "have" to wear bras?

A lot of things don't make sense, but we do them anyway. Someday, we'll all break free and be our true selves! Revolution!

I actually like sleeping on the floor a lot more... I sleep faster and sounder :)

But my mom is always screaming at me for that, because she got me this bed that's called "The Dux Bed" from Duxiana that's supposed to be nice and everything... I still prefer the floor. I really don't know why.

well I lived with just a boxsprings and mattress for a while when I was low on money for an apartment...it's exactly a bed just not aesthetically pleasing. now I have a bed frame yay! I guess it's obvious why people use mattresses and boxsprings but bed frames I guess are unnecessary...but I mean why do we decorate houses? So it feels like home.

I want one of those tempurpedic beds....but really those things cost like $3k, so in my dreams.

do you ever just jump face down onto your bed?

Without a bed support, that would be one big fall.

That's if your mattress is on the floor, if you didn't have a bed and wanted to try that..

At first, I was going to ask, "is this thread a joke?"
Then I realized that yes, yes, it is a joke.

Futon ftw! It's anything and everything a piece of furniture could and should be. Except a countertop...futons don't make good countertops...or armoires.

I like my bed... I wouldn't want to sleep on the floor.

I slept on the floor last night. It was just as comfy as my horribly uncomfortable bed.
