I loved studying in the library. I trained myself to study there and every time I entered the library I was "in the zone." It kept me focused and I would always accomplish a lot there.

Bingo. My home at college is very quiet, but I find it very hard to study there.

The library generally only works for me when it is homework that does not involve the computer (or involves it very little). I can read textbooks, take notes, study, blahblahblah just fine in there but when I bring my lappy I still find myself going on Facebook/CC/email.

I agree.

Anyway, my dorm is very noisy and I cannot concentrate in noisy environments. Therefore I have to go to the library or a quiet room (preferably one that is empty) in order for me to study.

I can write essays and do homework in the dorms, but if I really need to study I have to go to the library. The dorms are just way too distracting for me. There's always someone in my room doing something, the computer/Xbox 360 are right there, and all my friends are there so it's not a great place to get anything meaningful done. The library (particularly the science library) is much quiter so that's why I go there. I asked for a pair of Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones for xmas so maybe next quarter I can study in the dorms.

Like a lot people have said, studying in the library can be better than studying in the dorms. Sometimes, your room can be too distracting and all your thinking about is sleeping or Facebooking. At my college there are study lounges in the residence halls, so if you don't feel like walking to the library at 4am, you can always go there.

I have a desktop at college, so just being physically away from my computer helps. I find that the common areas are nice to study in, but not completely quiet which is how I like it. If the noise gets out of hand, earplugs work very well in muffling but not eliminating background noise. Also a great thing to have if trying to study in a Starbucks or public setting.

I dislike the library because computers are so available and you can easily pick out a million more interesting books than the one you have to study from. Plus there's the problem of walking there, which requires changing from your PJs and confronting the cold. And on top of that I constantly forget things and need to go back and forth between my room and study area easily.

1) Guaranteed quietness, essential for focusing (although it is a bit paradoxical that loud music sometimes helps me to concentrate). Which brings me to my second point ...

2) Studious atmosphere. Studying just seems easier when you're surrounded by nothing but books and other people studying. It reminds you of the competition at hand.

Agreed with many posters. I can't concentrate in my room because I have a bit of OCD/perfectionism when it comes to my environment- everything's got to be clean and neat when I'm working... which means I have to clean up my room and make my bed... and the library's already clean so... I go there for better focus.

Also, I love working in coffee shops!! There's something about that wonderful flavored smell of coffee. Mostly, I like to get out of my room just for more desk space, especially if I'm working on a history paper.

If the dorms are really loud, I'll go to the library and find a place to study away from everyone else. If I'm just doing homework, or something minor, I'll go into the main study area, and if I'm lucky, might meet some women.
