Why does everyone want to go to an ivy-league school when others are rated higher?

If you go to this website http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/t1natudoc_brief.php you'll see that schools like Duke, Stanford, CIT, MIT, and the University of Chicago aren't Ivy League schools but are rated before Cornell and Columbia (which are members of the ivy league). Why are ivy league schools so praised and people want to go to thems soo bad when there are other colleges rated higher that aren't ivy league schools? Ya know what I mean?

Maybe they just wanna say they got accepted into an Ivy?

Not everyone does. MIT and the University of Chicago were at the top of my list and I only applied to one Ivy- Princeton.

In case you haven't noticed... "everyone" doesn't want to go to an Ivy anymore. Many of the top students continue to apply to and attend them because they have been offering a superb education for many years. However, the other colleges that you mentioned are also extremely popular and are equally as respected academically.

zebra,

You seem to be struggling with the prestige issue. Many of your posts are about why certain schools have more prestige than others, or whether the extension division of a school has the same prestige as the traditional division of the school. Obsessing about prestige is not productive and won't help you feel better about yourself or the school you eventually attend. You have been admitted to at least one solid school and would likely be very happy there and very successful thereafter, and focusing on what you have to look forward to next fall will likely make you happier now.

um, MIT has more prestige than most of the ivies (probably all but HYP, and it's probably on par with prestige with those). And no, not "everybody" wants to go to an Ivy--personally I'd dump harvard for MIT any day ;) not that i'll have a choice or anything. lol. The people who want to go to a school just cuz it's an Ivy are stupid

dude Narcissa, stop praising MIT. its annoying

dude what is your problem? stop stalking me and criticizing everything i say, it's annoying. if you don't like it why don't you just block me or something so you don't have to read what i write.

BECAUSE YOU DON'T EVEN GO TO MIT. Honestly, I feel bad because you seem to be obsessed with a college you haven't even been accepted to, and since there's a good chance you're gonna get rejected, you should probably control yourself. Also, you ARE the definition of prestige whore. Idn if you've been corrupted by CC or what but you have stop thinking of the "Top 10" as the be all end all.

nah i just like MIT.

and i know i'll probably get rejected, but i don't really care. as long as i go to a college i'll seriously be satisfied. no need to feel bad for me, i know what i'm doing. -.-

why do you nerds care so much about getting into HYPS? It matters much less than you think. If you know your smart and charming... you can go to ASU and be succesfull, even sometimes making more than ivy grads

it's ironic because i often find beefs equally annoying in his praising and association with U Chicago.

but back to the topic, i find that many people rather pick other schools over ivy leagues. rankings are arbitrary, and can changes quite a bit over the years.

haha well. at least he's going there =P >.<

p.s. fine i'll stop :)

you're*
successful*

Lol. People with bad spelling and grammar can have success too. :D

HYP=prestige and better chance for working aboard.
