I am positive I could get accepted into this school, but I am curious as to what would make this a better choice than.. say, Virginia Tech or NC State?

This might not be of much use to you now, but maybe someone else will stumble across this in the future. I don’t go to FIT, but I’ve been researching the school for the past few months and here’s what stands out to me.

Up and coming. FIT ranks #2 among private universities in Florida according to US News. FIT also ranks ahead of USF and UCF in US News and is rising.

Student-teach ratio. The student-teacher ratio at the Melbourne campus is 9:1, which is far better than VT, NC State, and almost all the other universities in Florida.

Small student population. There are only about 4,500 students on the Melbourne campus. This is a plus for many because they feel overwhelmed, lost in the crowd, or the experience is impersonal at large schools.

Location. FIT is a only a two or three hour drive from most cities in Florida. FIT is a few blocks away from an international airport, so out of state students shouldn’t have a problem finding flights. FIT is near NASA and other engineering and technology companies, so their are many job and internship opportunities. FIT is also a few blocks from the ocean and a short drive from beaches.

Neighborhood and safety. I haven’t visited the campus, but looking at the map, FIT seems to be in a good area and I suspect the campus is very safe.

What’s not so good about FIT?

Few students. I listed this as a positive above, but I think there are too few students. FIT could double enrollment and still retain a small college feel. More students would increase the universities cash flow and allow them to improve the campus at a faster rate, which brings me to my next point.

The campus. FIT is a relatively new school, so it’s forgivable and they are likely improving it. However, the campus doesn’t have a unified theme, and the landscaping and overall design needs improving. Also the campus isn’t small, but it’s on the smaller side. They need to buy more land in the future to accommodate more students and research facilities.

I visited FIT today. I was pretty impressed with the campus. It’s on the smaller side, which I’m not fond of, but overall it was nicer than I expected.

any updates?
