I have to ask what colleges do you like (other than NYU)? All i’ve seen you do is bash other good schools like BC and now Harvard?? why?

Quite yourself

i dont think harvard is overrated and i was rejected from there…

it’s not overrated for education at all, but for undergrad, it is slightly. Even then, few schools can begin to compete with Harvard for undergraduate study.

Incidentally, I was watching this movie yesterday…

But, dude. This is a film. Doesn’t necessarily reflect life. Not exactly proof of Harvard being overrated.

The Professors at Harvard are ridiculously smart. I worked under a Harvard Professor over the summer who was a Harvard Med/Oxford Rhodes Scholar/MIT graduate who is like… very young and also leads her own band and was named top 100 living geniuses…

MIT >>> Harvard :D

whats ironic is matt damon went to harvard in real life

Part of a SAT essay on why Harvard is overrated:

“In the movie Good Will Hunting, the character…”

this gristmill topic is a frequent subject…

of course Harvard is overrated, as are most things that are regarded as “the best” or the most prestigious

Harvard is overrated in the sense that a lot people believe that since it is the overall number one university, that one should automatically attend it no matter what your academic field happens to be. For instance, a person interested in Journalism would do better to attend Columbia in my view than Harvard, even though Harvard is overall more highly ranked. There are many fields where this aspect applies. If I wanted to be an Admiral, I would go to the USNA as another example.

Something sort of related…

My friend’s roommate (who attends Harvard) was freaking out about having to write some paper, literally panicking. And, my friend assumed it was at least 20-30 pages (in my highschool you have to write a 20-30 page one senior year in most sciences). It turns out, it was a simple 5 page paper. How do people like this actually get in? Harvard is known to accept some…let’s say not so bright students, although it is the most competitive college (or top three in US or whatever)

It has nothing to do with how bright somebody is. Some people are panicky by nature and view things as more important than they may actually be.

Without knowing the prompt, it’s difficult to judge. I’ve had some extremely tough essay prompts with a short page limit. It’s extremely easy to ramble for multiple pages; it’s considerably more difficult to give all suitable data and explanations concisely and clearly within a page limit. For me, some of the 5-10 page papers I had to write were more difficult than my 100+ page thesis!

+1 except my thesis was 60 pages. Science is awesome :D.

But truly, the worst length paper ever is 3 pages-- too long to not write something substantial, too short to develop any complex idea and support it adequately.

In general, I find shorter papers to be more difficult to write. Not that being succinct is hard, but being succinct and still feeling I’ve provided ample evidence and given due attention to complexities can be tough.

In the first semester of my D’s freshman year at H, she emailed me a prompt for a short paper she was required to write. I have a J.D. and a half century of life experience, but the prompt blew me away. It was a brilliant question, but she needed me to help her “break it down” (and that took me awhile) so that it was manageable for an 18-year-old with a newly minted h.s. degree. Ultimately, she did well on the paper and hasn’t panicked again or asked for my advice.

My thesis was 83 pages. And it was right, too.

The only way that any college or university is overrated including Harvard is in students’ expectations that achieving their career aspirations is a given.

It also has to do with how rich your family is.
