Why I did not rush

sanjenferrer,

the conclusions you are making are very similar to the ones made by society that cause minorities to feel that when they are performing, they are representing their race as a whole. It's like when a black student does something and someone will, in their minds, vilify the entire african american race as a result, whereas if a white guy had done it, you would have held him individually responsible, and not in a million years considering blaming his entire race.

as a "minority" in sexual orientation, you should empathize with the fallacy of judging an entire group by one individual. If you had been with some non-greek, misogynistic, homophobic students, you certainly wouldn't have drawn the conclusion that all college students are that way. just bc you had a bad experience at one place, to allude to the fact that you judge all fraternities to be "heteronormative" etc. is damaging to the community of Northwestern at a whole.

I definitely encourage discussion to help bring these things out in the open and hear people's feelings, but as a student at Northwestern you should try to keep an open mind, and not let one fraternal experience cause you to negatively stigmatize everyone who has decided to be greek, because, even within the same fraternity there is soo much differing of personality and opinion. In my fraternity we have 'crazy' conservatives as well as members that damn near embrace socialism, so especially to judge all HOUSES on campus as the same by just a few experiences is definitely a mistake

sanjenferrer,
survey result fyi:
student agree "strongly" or "somewhat":
1. it is important to have laws prohibiting homosexual relationships
NU: 10.2%
very highly selective privates: 14.0%
all privates: 18.2%
2. same-sex coupes should have the right to legal marital status
NU: 81.4%
very highly selective privates: 75.4%
all privates: 69.9

there are homophobes everywhere, but NU has less than average. i bet NU frats have less than average too. so despite the heated debate, i hope this makes you feel better about your decision of coming to NU. ;)

I've never regretted my decision to come here. Girls here don't expect the door to be held open for them, those that wear high heels could actually pull them off (they don't give the air of superficiality), guys pee next to you in the stalls even though they could have peed farther away, my roommate says I could sleep with him just as long as I ask first and that he'll beat up this Cosi employee who called me a fag, the professors and students are quite interesting and unpretentious. The environment is such that I'm motivated to do schoolwork at unexpected times. On my first day, everyone on the floor who saw me move in knocked on my door to introduce themselves. People aren't clique-y.

Those are...mostly really random reasons to like NU. But I am glad you like it nonetheless!

Those are not ALL my reasons though.

"Girls here don't expect the door to be held open for them, those that wear high heels could actually pull them off (they don't give the air of superficiality)."

I can't imagine you're actually seeing too many high heels at this time of year! What type of superficiality were you expecting and pleasantly surprised not to see? Were you expecting the stereotype of "sorority girl"?

No, just fake girls.

Does anyone else find it ironic that sanj is basically complaining about certain groups stereotyping others - and yet, sanj is a repeat offender of the exact same thing?

I just find this whole thread kind of tiresome, I wish it would go away and not be bumped!

Well, I didn't read the whole thread, but..

any "stereotypes" about the sorority Kappa Phi Lambda? I mean, I went to their website and it reveals almost nothing. And, how hard is it to create a chapter in NU?

It is not easy to create a chapter at NU, I don't think. We just selected a new chapter to replace ADPi, which was removed due to low membership, and it was a long selection process before they settled on Zeta.

I don't even know what Kappa Phi Lambda is. Is it one of the multicultural sororities?

It's an "Asian Interest" sorority. But not limited to Asians.

Kappa Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. | Northwestern University

If anything, I'd like to create Kappa Delta Phi at the top 3 choices of my schools because all three don't have KDPhi and I'm pretty sure NU and Dartmouth don't have KPL.

NU has a KPL, as you just linked to their website in your post above? In terms of their sterotypes, from what i see, they're very clique-y but i know several that are pretty nice. Some people get really irritated with them, but i haven't had to interact with them as a sorority. General sterotypes? I don't know, i feel like NU students don't care about the multicultural greeks enough to spend time sterotyping them; they're pretty seperate from the on campus greeks.

But i agree, it's going to be tough to create a sorority at NU. Why Kappa Delta Phi? I'd have to say that its fairly difficult to have already decided that you dont' like the sororities at NU without going to any.

Oops, I meant Dartmouth and Rochester don't have KPL.

I didn't really say I don't like the NU sororities. It has always been an interest of mine to create a chapter. And, truthfully, I'm kind of torn between KPL and KDPhi. My best friend wants to rush for KDPhi and my sister wants to rush for KPL and I have good friends in both. I'm not sure if I will create a chapter; I just want to know if it's really difficult. I'm pretty sure they're clique-y and the majority of them are Asians.

By looking at their past pledge rolls, they're not only all Asian, but they're also seemingly all Chinese (except one Thai girl). From my understanding (and about half my friends are Asian (mostly Chinese) girls, they're reallllllllly cliquey.

very difficult without strong alumni/national support, if you want to create a "serious," "lasting" chapter. if you want to just make a small club with your friends, probably no big deal

How bad is the hazing/pledging at NU? I'm considering joing a frat, but I'm really not interested in one that will humiliate you before you can join. Obviously I"m okay with pledging and being their ***** and whatnot, but like how bad do some of the initiations get?

edit: oops, I apologize for reviving this thread. Meant to post it in the other greek one but this one was linked to within it and I got on the wrong one.

This thread is fine too. Some houses haze very, very badly. I will call out Delta Upsilon (DU) on this one, on account of my friend. Also of note was the former Lambda Phi Epsilon. Some others haze pretty hard (so goes reputation).

Others honestly have no hazing at all. I'm in a house like that. (While I've given more information than necesary to identify me in aggregate, I generally avoid identifying myself directly on this board, and definitely don't want to badly represent my house. No, I will not tell you in a PM.)

Just curious, does Kappa Phi Lambda have a sorority house?
