why i never liked being asian

<p>That's what I'm wondering too. And actually NYU and USC and comparable colleges (including UMich) should be in tier one.</p>

<p>Well, what did we expect from an asian mom... sigh. Good thing my parents are not like that (they used to be, but they gave up on me (well.. my major was art, so they didn't make me focus on academics as much as they made my bro do so...)</p>

<p>Geez.
Seems like I started some *****......The Asian bros all got into that so-called "Asian Test"</p>

<p>Hahaha. Bumpbump :)</p>

<p>Bumpbumpbump...I'm saving this thread from disappearing into oblivion. :)</p>

<p>another thing is that alot of (us) love to belittle others. i mean, it's ok if you (parents) want the best for your kid. but they don't stop there. they go on belittling others. </p>

<p>like a previous post who talked about mckenna and pepperdine. can you guess what was an 'asian' reply to that post? it's so insulting im just gonna ask you guys to guess.</p>

<ol>
<li> I like science, hate Math.</li>
<li> I speak French.</li>
<li> Not yet, unless you call Running Start in WA name brand.</li>
<li> I want to be an intellectual property law specialist.</li>
<li> I live in SW Washington, where there is a large Asian/Pacific Islander population.</li>
</ol>

<p>i do love math and science
-bc they are the easiest to succeed in coming from an asian family. i really believe that if my parents were american, they could help me with more the history and english aspect. cuase now im doing all that on my own, which is more difficult.
i am going to a top college
-bc for someone whose asian education is usually the only way to get a good job taht pays well so i can take care of my family and myself. i think that american kids have parental connecntions, and usually most are from families that are well off so they can be the artsy type and go to local state colelges and party all day.
i do want to be a doctor.engineer. healthcare.
-those kind of jobs reflect my skills and my hard work that i slaved over in hs while other people partied, SO Duh im going to down that path. um i see what its like working mediocre jobs like my parents had to do . so no thanks, im getting a respectable career.
-live in LA, yeah probably. if i can afford it.</p>

<p>so not so much the fact that im asian but more that i've seen what a lower middle class life is and its not the way i want to live. it's either education or connections that gets you to the top, and thus having no connecitons being immigrants, education is the only way at least for me.</p>

<p>isleBoy-
1. False
2. False
3. False
4. False
5. False</p>

<p>You're not asian. You're safe.</p>

<p>einnoc07-
1. True
2. No Response
3. False: Top doesn't mean name brand. UMich and UVA are top colleges but they're not necessarily name brand. Same with Tufts and Wake Forest.
4. True
5. True</p>

<p>I'm sorry....:(</p>

<p>My sentiments exactly. Having spent a couple of my years living in a slum where I stole at the age of four, I never want to go back to that life now that we've left it behind. Ever. Plus, I think it's really ingratiating since my parents have worked as hard as they have so I can get a good education to spit in their faces and say "Screw you, but I'm not trying."</p>

<p>Lots of Asians in this thread applying to UCB/UCLA...</p>

<p>Hey the Asian test actually looks pretty fun. Here's mine:</p>

<p>"I love math and science."</p>

<p>Nope: Ok, well, I love math because my teacher is an absolute hoot, but I'm pretty much below average science-wise, so this one doesn't count.</p>

<p>"...and-I-speak-(insert language)-"</p>

<p>Check: I speak English and Spanish. Plus I can say "bicycle" in Vietnamese because it sounds like "shut up". And a bit of Mandarin whenever necessary.</p>

<p>"and-go-to-(HYPSM or UC Berkeley or UCLA or Georgetown/Northwestern or some other brand name school)"</p>

<p>Check: YAAAAY I'm going to Harvard, and if that means being stereotypical, YAAAAAY</p>

<p>"-and-I-want-to-become-a-(doctor/engineer)-"</p>

<p>Nah. Although my current plans are a bit shaky: I plan to be part of the leadership of your nice, ethical company. Then I'll be discovered as I'm shopping in NYC one day and I'll become a major actress and/or singer. From there I'll launch my own beauty line and become a fashion designer. Somewhere in there I'm gonna be an architect.</p>

<p>"and-live-in-LA."</p>

<p>Nope: Imma Texan. And it'd be sooo cool to live in Singapore or Madrid or Australia.</p>

<p>2 out 5: I'm 40% Asian, 60% AMAZING</p>

<p>One thing about the Asian Test....if one part of one question is false, it's completely false.</p>

<p>The "Real", Undisputably Accurate Asian Test
True/False:
1. I love math and science.
2. I speak (insert asian language)
3. I want to go to HYPSM/UC Berkeley/UCLA/Gtown/Northwestern/some other brand name college.
4. I want to become a doctor/engineer.
5. I want to/intend to live in LA.
6. I take/intend to take any three of the following: AP Bio/AP Chem/AP Phys B or C/AP Calc BC.
7. Your parents think anything below 2200 is horrible.</p>

<p>0-1 trues: Not asian. You're safe.
2-3 trues: Marginally asian. Be careful.
4-5 trues: Moderately asian. Take some advil.
6-7 trues: Very Asian. I'm sorry </p>

<p>Me:
1. False (despise science)
2. True (Korean, English, French)
3. False (First Choice: UMich-Ann Arbor)
4. False (Stockbroker/Currency trader then hedge fund manager)
5. False (NYC/London/Greenwich, please)
6. False (Calc AB and Enviro)
7. False (shooting for 2100)</p>

<p>This is so totally repetitive...but ok whatever.
I got a 1/7 not asian yay :D</p>

<p>Anybody with Filipino parents? Do the stereotypes hold true? Are Filipinos considered "Asian" or are they less represented in college admits? Trying to help a kid with Filipino mom and don't know if she's getting the pressure that Korean kids have described (not familiar w/ other groups).</p>

<p>The "Real", Undisputably Accurate Asian Test
True/False:
1. I love math and science. - Nopes
2. I speak (insert asian language) - Yep, Korean and Japanese
3. I want to go to HYPSM/UC Berkeley/UCLA/Gtown/Northwestern/some other brand name college. - I'm going to Brown, so I guess a "Yes"
4. I want to become a doctor/engineer. - Nope
5. I want to/intend to live in LA. - Not really, probably Northeast
6. I take/intend to take any three of the following: AP Bio/AP Chem/AP Phys B or C/AP Calc BC. - None of those...I take AP Calc AB, which doesn't count here
7. Your parents think anything below 2200 is horrible. - Dunno...my parents don't really know the grading scheme for the SATs (they always forget)</p>

<p>I got 2 yeses, so I guess I'm marginally Asian. Sounds about right...good test! ;)</p>

<p>The "Real", Undisputably Accurate Asian Test
True/False:
1. I love math and science. --No, I dislike both very much...hoping to be a english/philosophy major...
2. I speak (insert asian language)--yeah, chinese
3. I want to go to HYPSM/UC Berkeley/UCLA/Gtown/Northwestern/some other brand name college.--I s'pose so, I'm going to Duke.
4. I want to become a doctor/engineer.--Definitely no, dream job's being a writer...hopefully in film.
5. I want to/intend to live in LA.--Nope, NYC, baby!
6. I take/intend to take any three of the following: AP Bio/AP Chem/AP Phys B or C/AP Calc BC.--Yeah, I take AP Bio, but only because I have to take four sciences to graduate and I took an AP last year so it would look bad if I went back to honors...Also, AP Calc AB, but that's not here
7. Your parents think anything below 2200 is horrible.--No, parents like 2100+</p>

<p>3/7--Yup, guess I'm sorta Asian...woo!</p>

<p>i'm surprised that asian parents really care that much about all this. it started out that way i guess, my parents cared more than me, but now i definitely care infinitely more than my parents. they just don't know enough about the system to care that much. they've been pretty much oblivous my whole hs career, like my grades how rank works, summer programs. i dk mayb its a good thing.</p>

<p>lol, I know what you mean einnoc. Until recently, my parents didn't know what classes I was taking. In fact, I'm pretty sure my dad still has no clue.</p>

<p>Is there any Hong Kong-ese in this post?
I'm so bored yet worried...</p>

<p>No...bumpbump</p>
