Why in the world is the dean's list at Berkeley cut-off at 4.0??

Pretty much every other school I know have their cutoff at 3.5-3.7ish.. I don't get it!!

It’s to ensure people like myself will never get on it.

There’s always Honors-to-Date! Right now the cutoff is around a 3.7.

Dean’s list is the top 4% of students. It’s not based on any specific GPA.

[Office of Undergraduate Advising: Dean’s Honor List](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/honor/honorlist/intro.html)

Honors to date is based on the requirements to graduate with distinction, high distinction, or highest distinction (other colleges use cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude).

http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/honor/honor.html</a></p>

because Berkeley has too many smart people.

the top 4% always end up with 4.0 or 3.96… which is pretty much a 4.0…

What is that? Like one A-? ._____.

higher than that lol

3.95 is 20 units of A and 4 units of A-… so I am assuming if you are taking a regular load of 15 units and get A for 11-12 units and an A- in a 3 unit or 4 unit class, you won’t make the dean’s list

Meh I made the dean’s list last semester, didn’t think it was too hard. If you take a look at the list, there are a lot of people on it.

…

.__________________________________. Out of the running in my first semester. Awesome.

But aren’t some majors just harder to get the grade in?

Getting straight A’s in one semester isn’t necessarily too difficult. I mean…think about it. You could take an introductory 5-unit language class along with two easy 4-unit breadths. Boom, Dean’s List! That’s why the list is pretty large.

But yeah, technically Dean’s List is the top 4%…but as starmia mentioned, that’s basically a 4.0…unless you’re taking a billion units in which case you could afford an A- I suppose.

is this only for L&S? is there something like this for engineering?

It says that the students took 13 units, with no P/NP credits permitted. So if I’m taking thirteen units and, on top of that, a decal or something that can only be taken P/NP, would I still be eligible for the Dean’s List?

I’m so discouraged right now… T_T Is this just for L&S or for everyone?

What’s the Dean’s List for? As in are there scholarships/opportunities on the line, or is kind of like the “honor roll” in high school?

Luckily for students in College of Chemistry, the cut-off for Dean’s List is a term GPA of 3.900. So I guess we have it pretty easy :P

(Actually, it’s really difficult to get that GPA if you’re taking 3-4 technical courses per semester…our list is small!)

^^afaik, dean’s list is just for bragging rights. and of course it might look good on your resume.

also I don’t think P/NP units are allowed on the schedule if you want to get on the list.

Has been playing video games every day and got 4.0 for 2 semesters… All science&math courses for CoC requirements… I guess it’s not that hard to get on the dean’s list…
