Why is MIT hating on that little school down the road?

I went to CPW and most of the time when people mention something about Harvard, they almost always include something. like MIT is harder and stuff

Why is that? Is it because MIT students work twice harder but Harvard grads earn 5 times than MIT grads? [sarcasm here, everybody]

… huh. Your experience has been different from mine.

In my experience, people definitely joke around about Harvard… when Harvard gets brought up. But we’re generally either too hosed or having too much fun to think about the little school down the road.

I thought it was just playful teasing. I ran into a few friends from Harvard at CPW–apparently Harvard and MIT students hang out together. I also ran into some Harvard grad students playing croquet in the Infinite at night, but that’s a bit different…

Are you sure that is true?
The MIT students I know hang out with their fellow Boston college students (or the ones that aren’t so uptight do) and this includes people from Harvard.
And they also have a few combined programs with Harvard.
As for the studying, MIT does not do any “easy grading” from what I hear, kind of like Princeton with the rigorous environment.

Ah, but Harvard is not down the road – it’s up the river! :)

MIT students disparage Harvard because – and I am speaking as a Harvard grad student here – Harvard is lame.

Let me give my version of things:

Honestly, we don’t really “hate” Harvard. However, when you are hosed, tired, it’s always nice to have a verbal punching ball, and Harvard is the ideal target.

I’m usually just joking - and I used to work there, btw. It’s nice, but I do like MIT a lot better.

It’s always sad when ‘telling it like it is’ is confused for ‘hating’ :P

I asked a lot of people about it because my parents would rather I go there. Most of the disparaging was in good humor.
In general though, Harvard is a good target because it’s perceived as number 1.

BTW, any perceived “rivalry” is largely one-sided. Harvard kids are too busy sipping fine teas in their ivy-covered brick buildings to notice our existence.

Well, except for when we hack their statue.

I think the whole “rivalry” thing is just for fun

lol

In my hometown, High School North and High School South have a heated rivalry. Why? Because they’re comparable schools in close geographic proximity.

Just like any rivalry, there’s not usually a “reason” beyond that.

But yeah, Harvard doesn’t really care that we seem to think that there’s a rivalry going on. Obviously don’t think that Harvard is a bad school, but do we think it’s lame? Yeah, kinda. =)
