Hello everyone,
So I was looking at a brochure from Smith, and it said that fewer than 20% of the international applicants are admitted. That is very low when compared to the school’s general acceptance rate of 43%. I’m just wondering why that is? Is the quality of international applicants generally lower? I thought acceptance rates were normally higher for international students, as colleges are always looking to diversify their communities.
Thanks in advance for you answers!
Colleges with need-based aid for international students universally have low international admission rates. There’s just a lot of foreigners competing for limited financial aid resources.
If you are not seeking aid from Smith, don’t worry about the international admission rate.
If you are seeking aid, your take-away should be that aid for international students is extremely competitive and you should plan accordingly.
Acceptance rates for internationals who need financial aid are one half or even one third of those for national applicants. Internationals who don’t need financial aid are on par with domestic applicants.

That’s a huge relief!
