Why is the minority so vastly overrepresented on here?

xckyle, thank you. :)

Great posts owlice. They should be mandatory reading for all new visitors to this board.

I think a lot of the students with great stats here achieve them only because they visit CC. I go to a small school and I would have no idea about college admission if I didn’t visit CC. Thankfully, I came to this site a long time ago, and I’ve learned a tremendous amount of information.

I think the best part about our board is that most of the people are humble. You don’t see 2300+ scorers looking down on 2000+ scorers because people inherently understand that an SAT score is just a number and to judge based on that would be foolish. CC can be harsh at times, but as a whole it is a very helpful community that allows many people to grow in environments where they just don’t have the counselors/experts/resources to thrive in.

I fell out of my chair laughing.

Then sit back up and open your eyes =]. There are definitely those people who are pricks, and they get the most attention because it’s easier to cite negative examples then it is to discuss positive ones. There are many people in various sections who give great advice and really help out. Anyone who answers a question on CC receives nothing in return, so they’re just doing it to help others out.

Chance threads are an exception, but even in that case, people exaggerate/try to flaunt their stats because they are children who are concerned about their future. Few people put up stats simply to make others feels bad. Most know they have a solid chance, but want more affirmation so they can feel safer and less scared.

^I semi agree with An0maly. Yes there are people on these sites that are humble, but I would not go as far as to say that MOST of them are humble; in fact I think only a small proportion is humble. The rest are, it seems, just trying to boost their own egos and find new ways to make themself feel superior.

To get back to point, the reason that CC doesn’t have people who aren’t anal about their scores is because CC is about getting into those selective colleges. Anyone (well, almost) can go to their local community college and be fairly well off financially. Only those who want to get into the better schools even bother to come here on CC.

And those stats aren’t necessarily true, though they most definitely can be. If every high school had one of those really great students (and every high school has one), then that’s thousands and thousands who can come on CC and post. You don’t know if that’s the majority or minority.

As for chance threads, there are those who REALLY don’t know what they can get into. For example, I’ve posted one chance thread, and I know that my stats are pretty good compared to others. However, I had one really big downfall–I am international and am in need of financial aid. I didn’t know if I had a chance at Harvard or at my local state university (turns out I’ll have the same problems going into both…). So, in the end, those sometimes are helpful to those who truly need it.

yuechen is right on this. Students with 20 ACTs and 3.2 GPAs don’t worry about getting “chanced” for their local community college or state U. Admissions decisions at these levels are much less holistic in that if you have the scores, you are most likely in. Why waste the time when worst case scenario is going to the tech school? Other kids spend their time leveling up their characters on WoW or in sports and don’t even bother. Frankly, that is a better use of their time than worrying about getting into college.

Just a reminder that 1700 on the SAT I is actually above average. The average is close to 1500. But agreed with many posters: students in this range generally have colleges that are essentially sure shots for them, and they are not usually concerned about colleges with 10% admission rates, or lower.
