Yes, I know what kind of answer I'm going to get, but this is just a general question (and I'm sure SOME of the people on this forum agree with me).

Are all the people that post threads at this forum like REALLY REALLY smart? I mean all I read about are kids who have a 3.9 GPA; 2300 on their SAT's, 2000 hours of community service, president of student council, etc... I mean when I read that, and kids saying that they're worried about getting into college, I go like "WHHAAAT"???
I mean I hope I'm not the only one on this forum that feels this way, but I think the standard academic performance of the members of this forum is really really high, there aren't so many "normal performance" kids in here.

This is the probably the first time in their lives that these "high-performing" kids are facing a situation that is, at this point, totally out of their control. Working harder isn't going to help, and there's nothing they can do but wait. An unfamiliar and unsettling position for most.

r6, you mention "college" but people here don't just want to go to ANY college, they want to go WAY up there, HYPS level. That's why they may seem slightly paranoid. :D

There was a lengthy thread about 2 years ago that tried to establish the average SAT of CC. As I recall, it hovered around 1460 on the old scale.

The harder you work and the more you accomplish, the higher your expectations when it comes to college. It is a bit of a trap. My son is one of those students who had amassed such a record by senior year that not getting into his top choice would have seemed like a big let down, as if all those years of achieving were for nothing -- probably more so for me, his mom, than for him.

OP: Believe it, all the people on this board are geeks, or rather super geeks, except the parents who worry so much about the whole college process. Take a look at the message boards, the most competitive schools have the most posts. Why. Because the "cool" kids would rather die than be associated with collegeconfidential, at least according to my "cool" brother who said only geeks go to this site. BTW, he got into an Ivy ED but had to request a nerd relative to find the info for the results announcement from no other than CC.

Haha. While that sounds plausible, I remember the thread and also recall complaints that it would naturally be answered primarily by the higher scorers since lower scorers typically aren't proud.

not everyone is supersmart, just most of them.
They are here because they are very concerned in getting into HYP or whatever.
Why would a normal kid with normal scores knowing he will get into his normal local college go on CC ?

Don't worry; there's a syndrome that hits every newb here at CC. We all feel inadequate at one point. Then we realize that hey! Those SUPER DUPER CRAZY AWESOME people are few in number.

On one of the "actual results" threads, I remember a kid who got into every single school he applied to (all top ones, including Harvard). He also had 4769376083675 awards. Now that I'm a bit more experienced, I know that there's something odd there, since he didn't have room to put all those on the app.

And of course the standards here are high. This forum tends to attract (as many in the past and present have noted) the best students, because those are the ones most worried about getting into the best colleges.

IMO there is a very defined type of kid who comes to/finds this site. They are smart, ambitious kids who don't live in a setting where people have a lot of knowledge about colleges. These are not prep school kids with great college counselors and scattergrams for the last 10 years at their high schools.

These are kids spending their spare time trying to understand the college game, not out at a party in general. But they are not the legacies or feeder school kids that got the college low down over dinner for the last 18 years.

What's really interesting to me is the number of internationals, recent immigrants and asians. Helps you understand why the majority of blacks going to top US colleges are not american blacks.

This is a tiny microcosm of college applicants: VERY ambitious kids who take charge of their college plans not getting good info in their homes and schools. They will be a successful bunch compared to the average American kid who just applies to the local schools or lets their parents pick.

This forum has definitely given me an inferiority complex... I guess it's good to be realistic, but it really has lowered my opinion of myself. I have a reputation at my school for being the smartest, the most active, etc etc etc... I've been ranked first in my class since freshman year, and people have been spitting IVY at me since I was 8.

After coming here I realized it was all totally pointless; I don't have half a chance. It's definitely given me a fatalistic attitude. I kind of wish I'd never come here... but I keep coming back. Oy.

My SAT was only a 2270. :( (Ha, that's not the reason I won't get into my top choices, though. Mostly my SAT IIs in the 600s. HUMBUG ON THIS PROCESS!)

Suze's assessment is definitely true for me. Neither of my parents went to college, and my high school very rarely sends kids to top schools.

^^ oh shut up. (I say this in a nice way.) A 2270 is perfect for Ivies. You're probably a very strong applicant. Perk up.

You're actually one of those people that makes US feel inferior. How many people wish they had a 2270? How many would love to be ranked #1 in their class?

Yeha that's what this forum does. But you ONLY have a 2270? Man I wish I got that kind of score, I haven't taken the SAT yet but if I get something like that...
