Okay guys, its come to my attention that 99% of all College Confidential users are fricken geniuses. Every thread i go to, whether its recent, or from 3 years ago, the people posting usually have above a 2000 SAT score. I live in NY and for my school, the average person gets around a 1300, and barely anybody breaks 2000. I come onto this site and find literally nobody that is "average" as in (me). I mean yes, i have a decent gpa, and decent EC's, but my SAT score is s**t and even though im studying like crazy i dont think i could ever break 2000.

Also, when people say, "I got a 2040 on my first try but im not sending it" then i feel like a complete dumbass to everyone else on College Confidential. Is it just me? Or does anyone else feel this way? (probably not cause yall are geniuses)

The people on CC are a self-selecting group of individuals who are intensely aware of the college process. The average person isn’t all that concerned with doing anything besides graduating high school and attending their state flagship so you probably won’t find them browsing CC trying to dissect the Forbes college rankings. If you dig deep enough you’ll find people similar to you but the part of CC that glories HYPSM scares away people of your ilk.

Basically the above. Don’t get scared away.

Those who are on CC are usually hard workers and who really care about education. The average Joe would never be on CC and would be on twitter/facebook usually.

@Evailed @theanaconda @learner83 ok guys thanks, I think im an average joe lol

OP, check out these threads:

And, cheer up. You knew, in theory, that there were people out there with these high grades and test scores, right? Well, it turns out a lot of them hang out here. It doesn’t make you any worse off to know that. Run your own race.

However, one piece of advice: stay out of the entire “What Are My Chances?” forum. It will do you no good at all.

There are plenty of average kids and their parents on CC, we just don’t mention GPA and SAT/ACT as much. The threads mentioned above are followed by very supportive and knowlegeable parents of kids with more average stats. Join us as we ask and answer questions about choosing an appropriate college, college applications, financial aid, etc.

Yeah, those of us with kids in the “regular smart” category are not obsessing over college admissions, and frankly some of us roll our eyes at students and parents who think one B on a transcript (or–gasp–a study-hall period) will ruin their chances at elite schools. Whether we went to such schools ourselves or not, most of us have confidence that our kids will be successful no matter where they go for undergrad. We have lived enough to know that a fancy diploma is not in itself a ticket to success, and that many wildly successful adults have very “average” academic backgrounds.

Ha ha ha! This is the elephant in the room, here, isn’t it?! Luckily SAT score has absolutely nothing to do with the potential to have a happy and productive life. If only people would focus more on building real skills and less on fake status indicators (does a 2400 mean you are a good person–no!) we might have some hope of making a better world some day…

I’m here obsessing because it’s our family’s first time going through this, and I’m by nature a researcher and can leave no stone unturned. It says a lot more about me than it does about my daughter or her future.

Okay thankyou everyone, this makes me feel better lol

@thegrant: I hate to say this…but 99.9% of the real “geniuses” and “prodigies” do not hang out on CC nor do they care. They are too busy doing their own thing.

@gravitas2 like finding a cure for cancer and malaria!

@Gravitas2 is right. Many kids here seem very insecure given their grades and scores. They may not anything else except their grades and scores (although they seem to post every activity under the sun) so they fixate on that.

My daughter is a solid student but not a genius (thank goodness). I used this site, not to compare, but to get college names and suggestions. If you ignore the obvious top 20-50 suggestions and really dig, you can find some great ideas.

please stay. We need more “average” students

Im gonna reply back on this thread in March - April when I find out which colleges I get accepted to lol

@Sally305: I have kids in both categories, one who’s chasing the high stats and valedictorian goal and one who needs a calmer, more measured path through life. I’ve posted in both class threads, the “class of” and the “class of - 3.0”. I think ultimately the parents in both groups know their kids and know what works best for them, and are doing what they do for that reason. And honestly, I don’t think either of my kids would “be successful no matter where they go for undergrad”. I think college fit matters. Apparently I’m not alone, or CC wouldn’t have 20 separate search criteria on their match page, and every kid here would just be applying to their local CC anyway
.
@thegrant: Yeah, definitely stay away from the “chance me” threads, or at least just use them for entertainment value. They’re just…odd. It’s possible to look at a college’s statistics to see where you fit into the herd-- any other answer is basically “it’s a crap shoot”.

You should also consider that a lot of what you see is either completely made up, or projections.

Average student here too don’t worry there are a few of us on here lmao

@Machovich Oh yeahhhhh lol

OP, there are test-optional schools if your test scores are low compared to your GPA. Here is a list:

<a href=“ACT/SAT Optional List - Fairtest”>http://www.fairtest.org/university/optional

@intparent wow thanks! I dont think ill be needing those though- my main worr/weakness is just my SAT score (1700) and lack of 4’s and 5’s on all of my AP tests. Im applying to an art college where my portfolio means everything but i feel like everybody else applying will be mad smart lol
