I've never seen an "M" written that way and it doesn't strike me as very appealing to look at. Is there a story behind it?

I always thought it was the specific type of font they used. I don’t believe there’s a story behind it.

I found this little tidbit on the U of MN website - “Note that the Block M is a graphic design, not a font or a style of type.” So I guess it is not a font. Some art student must have “designed” the “M” decades ago.

I read somewhere that the current Block M design originated from a formation of the first U of M marching band 100 years ago.

100 years of UW envy.

I laughed at Barron’s comment

Why would the Gophers envy the Univ of Washington?? :)

There you go, Barrons. I was wondering - the Minnesota “M” is a “W” from the opposite side of the field. Could it be that they designed it to turn the Wisconsin “W” on its head?
