FSU is just as good if not better than many of the public universities in the AAU. I noticed Kansas is a member and FSU isn't, that just doesn't seem right to me.

Is attaining AAU membership included in FSU’s Strategic Plan?

http://fsuspc.fsu.edu/media/FSU-Strategic-Plan_2008-09-2013-14.pdf

FSU is working to join the AAU.

FSU has been working hard to attain membership. Here is a report of a visit of a past AAU president: http://www.uff-fsu.org/art/Hasselmo.pdf.

It was a key point when candidates for the position of president of FSU were interviewed, and it will be a priority for President Barron.

Engineering and Med. that’s all you need to know.

The latter of the two should be easier to fix in the long-term, but that all depends on whether they start building more of a teaching/research focus. As for the COE - it’s all political.

FSU doesn’t mention anywhere in its strategic plan its desire of receiving AAU membership. USF has it on the front page of its strategic plan in its vision statement. I think FSU should put its goal of attaining AAU membership in black and white so everyone in the FSU community knows FSU is seeking membership in AAU and how it is going to get there.

[Strategic Plan: Shaping Our Future, 2007-12 - University of South Florida](http://www.ods.usf.edu/Plans/Strategic/vision-mission.htm)

^ While they didn’t directly state that they wanted to join, but it appears that they’re at least trying to meet their standards.

^Well you at least read through the plan. You and me means at least two people have read the plan! The lines you highlighted are the only time in the whole plan the words “Association of American Universities” are used, and the manner it is used is far removed from being a commitment by FSU to attain AAU membership…FSU is just using it as a measurement standard for something internally.

In the strategic plan is another line:

7.12 Seek and receive Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement.

Why didn’t FSU pop a similar line somewhere in its strategic plan like:

“Seek and receive membership in the AAU.” —It’s not to be found in the plan.

Anyhow, there are people at FSU much smarter and experienced than me doing the planning; I was just making a personal observation about no reference being made in FSU’s strategic plan to getting in the AAU, and also pointing out a different tact used by the peer university. Maybe President Barron could get a sign nailed on his office wall saying: “Make payroll Friday, then get in AAU.” Just put something in writing.

Fret not, lizard.

The (2009-2010) Mission Statement of FSU includes the commitment to join the AAU: http://www.ir.fsu.edu/Factbooks/2009-10/Mission.pdf

Plus, President Barron was a leading administrator at two different AAU universities (Penn State and U Texas).

^^^Thanks for posting the mission and vision statements. Not trying to beat this to death, but it gets confusing even trying to determine what the school’s mission and vision statements currently are when each university dept. seems to have its own statements. Maybe the university should work toward more uniformity. What happened to the statements on p. 7 of attached strategic plan–I thought they were the current FSU vision and mission statements–not what you just posted. Did FSU trash the strategic plan? I understand the Pathways to Excellence program is kinda at a stall now too with money being so tight. It would seem obvious with a new president and new trustees, FSU will change the direction of many programs in a positive way. No doubt FSU is working on AAU membership.

No idea, lizard. But the 2009-2010 Fact Book is published by the Office of Institutional Research and should be considered authoritative.

I cant wait till the day when the COE and COM finally become independent powerhouse departments. If the COM could rack up the dollars that USF,UM, UF med school make through research-(over 40% of each schools research money) then FSU would be amazing. Furthermore we need to kick out FAMU out of the COE, asap

AAU doesn’t seem to be in any big rush to add new members. It’s been 9 years since last two new schools, Texas A&M and Stony Brook, became members.

[Association of American Universities](http://www.aau.edu/about/article.aspx?id=5476)

^ Funny you say that lizard–the next day, on April 21st, the AAU added Georgia Tech :).

I’m hoping FSU gets it’s invitation in the near future as well!

Damn, should have been FSU.

Should have been. Will be soon.
