D is a HS junior building her list and has recently added IU as a possible fit. We live in NY. D attends a privat magent IB school. She is a 3.5 ish student having taken full IB, and AP courses. Her SATs are around 2000 . She is a quirky funny indie kid, really into music and writing. She is one of those kids who talks to everyone and is always happy.

I know nothing about IU. I am wondering if it is worth the trip for a visit.

She is not the kind of kid who would go greek and has already said she want to avoid the Ugg/Northface only type of school. She prefers that there be all types. Could she fit in here?

I have seen photos/video (it is beautiful), academically it seems a fit, and I love the idea of her attending a friendy midwest school.

Please help me out...what is the downside to IU?

I agree with all the positives you listed. Since you asked for downsides, it’s expensive for out of state students. It has a reputation for being a party school, but with 30,000 undergrad there, I’m sure there are all sorts of kids and social circles that fit all kinds of people. There will be all types of students there for sure.

Well–IU’s been a great place for my D who is about as far from sorority/ugg boots/party animal as you can get. Bloomington is a funky fun town, and she’s really into writing and music and the arts/alternative scene. There are all types on campus, you can find your niche. (Have your daughter look at Collins dorm community online–my D didn’t live there but had lots of friends there her freshman year).

It is a beautiful campus and she’s found lots of academic opportunities.

So–if money’s not a big issue (maybe your D would qualify for a scholarship?)–I think it is worth a look. Especially if your D likes the energy/vibe of a big bustling flagship school. My D likes all the resources on campus, and has had great writing courses.

If you decide to go, or just want more info from a current student who sounds somewhat like your D in her interests, send me a PM and I could introduce your D to my D via email or maybe they could chat on FB or something.

Many students from NY attend IU. The Jacobs School of music is quite prestigious and IU has strong theatre and dance programs so there are many students who are creative and not the Greek/Ugg Northface types. My D is in the business school , was never interested in Greek life and loves IU. I think it is worth a visit. If your daughter’s GPA is 3.8 weighted then she could qualify for the Distinction scholarship of $9000 per year. She should also look into the Hutton Honor College. Good luck.

Thanks all for your responses. It does sounds like a great place. The negatives sound like what we had identified (size, and cost for out of state, and distance from home).

IUMOM thanks for the offer for D to reach out. As she continues researching school, I will keep your very generous offer in mind.
