Why MHC??

hi all future and current MHC students!

i was accepted for the class of 2010, so now i'm trying to make my decision between MHC and BMC. i wanted to know: WHY MHC?? MHC is pretty much #1 for me, and the Experience weekend i'll be going to in a couple weeks will more or less make or break the decision for me xP

Why I like MHC:
1. equestrian center - admittedly this is one of the greatest draws for me, as i've always wanted to learn how to ride, but my parents never wanted me to because of safety reasons -_-"
2. Asian Studies and Romance Languages & Literatures - my double major, and MHC has 'em both ^^ (as well as the design your own major O.O)
3. Five College Consortium - i was wary about going to a women's college, but it's nice to know that there are other colleges nearby and i wouldn't be totally isolated!
4. musical ensembles - i'm a violist and want to continue playing in an orchestra
5. friendly alums - the two alums that i've met so far were sooo friendly and loved mhc so much i couldn't help but keep mhc at the top of my mind. the online chats were awesome too. i'm hoping to love the rest of the community when i go visit in a couple of weeks!

though MHC is at the top of my list, i'm not 100% sure, and i'm totally paranoid about picking where i'll be spending the next four years of my life lol. so any and all viewpoints would be helpful and much appreciated.

whats BMC?

I assume BMC is Bryn Mawr College?

yea, sorry, BMC is Bryn Mawr College. i'm just lazy and am always using acronyms these days lol

Hey,

I was also accepted for 2010 @ Mt.Holyoke and am almost definite I will be going. If music is really important I would definitely choose MHC. I did an overnight at Bryn Mawr in the fall and although there are music ensembles available you will not find them in the immediate surroundings of Bryn Mawr. Most of the students that are in the music program @ BMC are in groups at either Haverford or Swat. If you are going to minor all of your classes would be taken @ Haverford. BMC's is an awesome school though but if you think music will be a pertinent part of the college experience MHC has a much stronger program. I know BMC has some on campus a cappela groups but no instrumental.

I play the bassoon and am looking to perhaps get involved with the symphony orchestra @ MHC. Best of luck to you in your decision!

i was considering applying to both but ended up applying to MHC ED.
still
i loved bryn mawr and it was actually the reason i decided to look at other womens colleges.
i guess at bryn mawr i didnt feel like i could relate to all the girls as much
they seemed more radical whereas at MHC everyone seemed very down-to-earth and just sort of normal
also my dad went to haveford and goes up a bazillion times a year so that was a turn-off for me
both are really great schools
good luck with you decision

I PLAY VIOLA TOO BTW!!! and plan on playing at mhc soooo that's another reason you should go to mhc :-P

"they seemed more radical"
could you explain what you mean?? please and thank you~~ ^_^

yay for violas!! wow...i've "met" so many violists associated with mhc!! O.O lol, how awesome!

Ha! My daughter plays the viola and is deciding among MHC, Smith, and Bryn Mawr. (She applied to co-ed schools as well, but by the time the acceptances came in, she was sold on an all-women's college.)

i guess by that i meant like more radical feminist
like kind of out there all though i know that all bryn mawr girls arent like that
cant think of any really good example, but i will keep thinking
maybe its just me too
when i talked to just random people i saw walking around bryn mawr they just overall didnt seem as happy whereas at mount holyoke i got a more welcoming/cheery vibe

theyre really both great though
i remember falling in love with bryn mawr's gorgeous campus
they both have really cool traditions too
hope this helped?

momwaitingfornew - which do you think your daughter will end up choosing?

Probably Smith. Academically, it has more of what she is looking for - plus she likes the proximity to Northampton. Despite my showing up on this thread, I believe she has ruled out MHC. It's between Smith and Bryn Mawr right now.

Out of the three campuses, she likes MHC best, then Bryn Mawr, but she found MHC too quiet and isolated. She will be visiting MA next week before she makes her final decision. (We were at Bryn Mawr this past weekend.)

She is not a radical feminist, BTW.

"She is not a radical feminist, BTW."
haha, do you think that's why she might choose smith over bryn mawr?

might i ask what your impressions of bryn mawr were? i was unable to go myself this past weekend T_T;

Smith has a more radical reputation than Bryn Mawr, that's for sure.

I love Bryn Mawr. The women there are all extremely intelligent, and the campus is gorgeous, although of a different character than MHC. I like the fluidity between the Haverford and Bryn Mawr campuses. If my d. decides to go there, she'll spend much of her time at Haverford since that's where her major would be - and where the orchestra rehearses.

As for the weekend itself, at first she found it awkward and contrived. She hated it until they got to dinner and could be themselves. The next day, she attended three classes (I can't believe she did that instead of just hanging out), and liked them in varying degrees. She found intermediate French to be substandard, but loved the psychology class. The philosophy class had a great prof, although my d. was less interested in the material. She left feeling that she could be very happy at Bryn Mawr.

Many of the students there were deciding between MHC and Bryn Mawr. Many fewer were caught between Bryn Mawr and Smith. We also encountered women who were deciding between a woman's college and a co-ed - and most that I spoke to left feeling that Bryn Mawr was it. I did overhear one student who was also considering Bates rule out Bryn Mawr on the basis of the French class she attended (probably the same one my daughter did.)

The Bryn Mawr women made a big deal out of how non-competitive the college was because the honor code forbids them to speak about their grades. Therefore, no one knows how anyone else is doing in the class, or where she stands in comparison to her classmates. They all loved that.

The biggest disadvantage is the course offerings, many of which are listed in the catalogue but are rarely offered because the faculty is too small. Haverford and Bryn Mawr share a course catalogue and divide departments between the two, so that doesn't help. Of course, students can always go to Swarthmore, although logistically that's more difficult.

I think they're all wonderful schools. My D picked Mount Holyoke because she is a CS major and at Smith everyone was doing their major coursework at UMASS. While Bryn Mawr is absolutely awesome, the CS department there also was weak. It's great that you can take courses at other schools, but bear in mind that it really helps to have a community of like-minded souls on your campus. If you are flexible about your major, Bryn Mawr is a good choice.
