Explanation to all my questions. I'm so happy I was out of this screwed up place called HS when I was 16. I recall my 9th grade and I want to cry, it was extremely miserable. Honestly, I'd rather be kicked in the balls than go through that sublime, psychological strangling.

I read through it for about 15 minutes and then skipped to the bottom few paragraphs. Pretty interesting stuff. I wouldn't say it caused any epiphanies, but this guy pretty much has it right.

You know, I don't know whether or not the media exaggerates teens' desire to be popular, but at my school, no one really tries to be "popular" and being "smart" has nothing to do with popularity. I think it's mostly social grace, anyways... if you're the stereotypical "nerd" that is socially awkward to be around and make weird nasal noises, yeah, people aren't really going to like you. But who is to say that charming, funny, well-liked people can't be smart as well? I know many well-rounded kids, from funny athletes in advanced math classes and on honor roll to trendy cute girls with 4.0 GPAs.

my school's pretty diverse so it's not as socially segregrated as some other schools...anyways once you passed like your first two years of high school popularity really doesn't matter anymore...actuality, it never really matters -though, i find that being popular/unpopluar in high school very interesting since b/c some ppl never get over it. never.

i really have not heard anyone called someone a nerd/geek in the four years of my high school career. i don't think our generation or our future generations of high school will be anything like it was in the '80's...but who knows? the fashion is comming back, maybe the attitude too?

...totally mumbling about random things...forgive me...i'm procrastination sleep

That's why it's good to get de-nerdified. I underwent this process in 2005 and now I'm the token expert on fitness and nutrition (although how well I practice what I preach at times is a bit questionable...like when I had burger king for a week straight about a month ago :o).

Come on, you nerds dont follow the NBA or NFL? Shame Shame Shame.

Smart /= nerdy
You can have a 3.95 GPA or something and still be very outgoing, popular, and athletic.
Just don't flaunt your SAT scores, extensive vocabulary, etc.

I agree with woeiseponine and alpha2018,
Honestly, I don't think your intelligence level determines your popularity level.
Perhaps my school is more accepting in general, but really, we can joke around that we are "nerds" while still easily fitting in with others that focus less on academics.

I've read that article (well, parts of it), and it is pretty interesting. My opinion is that while "nerds" seem to be intelligent, they lack knowledge of how to deal with people. I think over the last year I've kind of developed this skill and in turn I've made a lot more friends, met interesting people, etc.

It really isn't that hard to do, but some people just can't get it. Take my friend for example- he's EXTREMELY socially awkward. We were at a party this weekend, and we met a few girls from another school. On facebook, one of these girls was having a discussion with another person from my school and my friend saw that she called him cute. You know what he did in response to that? He messaged her with Weezer lyrics. Like, no lie, he literally sent her the first verse of Buddy Holly. I asked him why he did that and he said that he thought it was funny.

...yeah, I'm ranting, but it ****es me off how stupid some people can be.

@MegaVortex: There's nothing wrong with the concept, but come on, Weezer lyrics? If you're gonna use a song to respond to someone it should at least be relevant lmao

Wow, that was needlessly long. The entire thing was summed up in this paragraph:
[quote]
Few smart kids can spare the attention that popularity requires. Unless they also happen to be good-looking, natural athletes, or siblings of popular kids, they'll tend to become nerds. And that's why smart people's lives are worst between, say, the ages of eleven and seventeen. Life at that age revolves far more around popularity than before or after.
