@mtmanna2020, I may be stating the obvious here, but is it because the West Coast talent is more interested in movies and tv than in traditional MT? Do 17-year-olds out there go straight to LA to try to hit it big while they are young enough for juvenile parts, rather than spend 4 years training for MT and growing too old for the camera (at least in LA terms)? Are there more film/tv programs on the west coast?
I have wondered this also? We live int the NW and theater is huge in Oregon and Washington, although honestly maybe not MT? but more straight theater. The UW just started a BA (I think) MT program, CWU has a great (BFA) program but unknown:) (Hey CWU get some marketing). Does Oregon have any? Willamette I think has a great vocal program and is working on MT. California a few. more, but it is often putting together your own MT program out of an acting or VP program. It is really interesting. California does have a large number of film programs. My daughter has a friend who wants to be a film maker and she is focused on California and a few school in nearby states. And she has tons to apply to.
A lot of LA-based actors go to San Diego, and probably also Orange County and Riverside, to do musical theatre. There is plenty of MT in Southern California, but LA is not the center of it.
From my very anecdotal experience of browsing CC, I would say that there is not as much West Coast presence on CC in general. Many kids on the West Coast go to the strong public universities here, and there is not an abundance of private colleges in this area of the country. So, possibly the entire college culture here is a bit different, and fewer people overall are even aware of CC.
MT in big Washington. The 5th Avenue Theatre as an example is one of the development/try out theatres for shows headed to Broadway (Shrek, Catch Me if You Can, Memphis and many others), also the ACT Theatre (First Date and others). There are several theatres in California where the same can be said. LaJolla Playhouse for example I think is where they worked on Thoroughly Modern Millie prior to Broadway and many others there as well.
The west doesn’t lack the intersest in MT, they lack the schools. There are just a handful.
halflokum this is true. i posted about the NW and on further reflection I realized we do have a ton of theaters pursuing MT but not a ton of colleges and in our families case MT was very very limited in our kids schools, but I have to admit we focused on academic schools for our kids. We did enroll in a few arts based schools over the years but none of them did any MT or really any voice or dance, just acting and lots of visual arts. Drawing, painting, sculpture, film. I posted without really thinking about the issue:)
West Coast in the house! What we’re finding is that there aren’t many schools out here that focus on MT and/or aren’t connected to professional companies AND our state schools (as well as some UCs) are so impacted students can’t get classes and can’t graduate on time.
@mtmamma2020 I was thinking the same thing! but @toowonderful your comment was priceless LOL!
Another West Coast person here whose D would have done Chicago Unifieds (admitted ED to top choice school and so pulled all subsequent applications) at the urging of her voice teacher. At the time her teacher felt Chicago Unifieds offered the best venue for kids to be seen for several reasons, most of which I’ve forgotten (I remember she felt some auditors were more distracted in NYC and logistics trickier). Plus the Palmer House invented brownies.
As far as a relative shortage of west coast MT programs goes I’d add that there are also, sadly, relatively fewer paying MT jobs on the west coast. For example, Seattle has a solid MT scene between 5th Ave and Village, yet overall gainfully employs very few MTs relative to say NY or Chicago.
Chicago Unifieds: (a) draws the most programs, (b) offers the widest selection of walk-in auditions, and © offers more days to auditions than the other venues. The travel and onsite logistics are arguably the easiest in Chicago as well, although the weather can be a problem.
