Why not invited to be an Echols scholar?

It appears S hasn't been invited. I think it may be because the program's emphasis is on things beyond academy. Any thought?

Forgot to add his SAT is over 2300, three SAT subjects 800, National merit semi finalist, AP national scholar. Good EC.

OOS

Garchinger, there is a lot of subjectivity and extraneous factors that go into Echols/Rodman selections. For instance, they’re not going to choose a disproportionate number of students from “x” state or region. Similarly, like college admissions, ethnic identification and backgrounds, I believe, are considered. Lastly, extra-curriculars and awards come into play as well. The good news is your son can apply next spring if he’s interested. I would certainly not let this deter him from choosing UVA.

@jc40 thanks for sharing the insight. It makes sense.

Helpful information on UVa website

In part, it says:

"Application essays are of decisive importance in the selection process. It is crucial that essay responses demonstrate intellectual vigor, clarity, imagination, and argumentation rather than catalogue a resume of courses and activities. While it is not necessary to offer a dissertation in particle physics, the essay should demonstrate thought and lucidity. More than one student with a 1500+ SAT and a dozen AP classes has not received Echols because the essays were weak, superficial, perfunctory, or dealt with frivolous topics. "

The link shared by Mom2twins really explains our philosophy.

Just received a letter, saying he has been invited. Don’t know why no emails last week. Maybe he was the last ones who were selected after the invitation was sent out with emails.

No, we did not add to the initial group. The letters were run at almost the same time as the emails.

Your son may have opted out of email communications. He can email undergradadmission@virginia.edu to opt back in.

@Dean J thanks for the explanation. I will let him know.

Congrats, Garchinger!
