why reed essay, social aspects

in the why reed essay, what social aspects did you guys talk about?

the intellectualism of the student body and the genuine interest in academics. I also wrote briefly of the Reed shirts that say "Communism, Atheism, Free Love."

I basically wrote about my experience on campus, visiting alone, and buying a reed sweatshirt. You'd have to read it to understand.

If any of you want to read it, I can PM it.

hey onilawliet

I would be glad to read your essay. You can PM me

i PMed it to you.

so...what did everyone else write about?

I wrote about a friend of mine who goes to Reed and some of his experiences, and some of the impressions I have... I haven't visited Reed (it's on the other side of the country :-( my parents aren't happy about that), so I couldn't write from first-hand experience. I kind of melded the social and the academic into one...

Yeah, I talked about similar things that OniLawliet talked about. Basically that the Reed student body is passionate about academics, and that spending time in a community devoted to learning would help me grow as a scholar and as a person. I also brought in a lot of stuff from my campus visit so it was more...personal.

Golddustwoman: My son's Why Reed was almost entirely about social things, and not about academics. He wrote about the Reed LJ community and how it reflects Reed's social character. He focused in particular on an experience he had visiting on his birthday. I had secretly alerted people via LJ about it, and everywhere he went on campus during the tour and classes and stuff, people kept wishing him a happy birthday. The essay talked about how it really gave him first hand experience about the sense of community at a small school. Let's see -- he also talked about how the LJ debate about a particular event demonstrated how people have strong opinions and defend the honor system, and how much that meant to him.

He let his others essays speak to academics, particularly his graded paper.

I have a spent a bit of time visiting reed after dropping out of UC and I am working on an application now. I am so out of practice in writing essays!

Hey Oni...if you ever check this again, I'd love to read your essay! :)

can i read it?!
