So here's my situation... right now I'm a freshman at Duquesne University and I absolutely hate it. I'm looking to transfer to another college and one of my top picks is definitely Pitt. Butttt, before I make any decisions, I'd like to hear from some Pitt students why they think I should transfer there. What makes it special to you guys, what's your favorite thing about it, ect. I do have a few questions on top of that I was wondering if you could answer also like how friendly are the students and faculty, how would you compare academics at Pitt to Duq, and also if I did transfer how difficult would it be for me to get on-campus housing. If you can answer any of my question I would really appreciate it!

Thanks,
Carrie.

P.S. I know this is very informal, but that's how I intended it to be.

Why don’t you walk down the street and ask your questions? Or hop on the bus and spend some time in the Union? You could probably get a really good feel for the school. You might also try to get a ticket to a football game.

Great suggestion by MD Mom. Get up to Oakland and check it out. I think you’ll notice a difference in general school spirit, and if those Princeton Review surveys are correct, student happiness. Academically, honestly, Pitt is better known and regarded in anything that is also offered by Duquesne. Not that rankings are the end-all, but I really don’t know of any ranking in any subject where that isn’t true, although perhaps a Duke will enlighten me. Not that Duquesne isn’t a fine school in its own regard, but it isn’t well known outside Western PA, and it is what it is: a small, regionally-known, Catholic university. The downside may be that Pitt is obviously larger, so you may feel more anonymous, and Oakland is more congested, campus wise, with it bisected by Forbes & Fifth, while Duquesne sort of sits off in its own world up on the bluff. Getting on-campus housing at Pitt may be difficult for transfers.

Take MD Mom’s advice, walk around Oakland and check out the campus and ask some students what they think. BTW, most of Pitt’s non-residence hall buildings are open to the public so you typically walk in an check them out (Cathedral of Learning, Union, library, Posvar, Frick Fine Arts, Petersen Events Center, etc). Heck, you might even be able to jump in a tour (check with admissions in Alumni Hall).

Carrie,
I transferred from Duquesne to Pitt after my freshman year of college. I’m now starting my junior year of college at Pitt.

It is AWESOME. At Duquesne, I made hardly any friends as I felt all the girls were stuck up and snobby (I’m in nursing, so mostly girls). At Pitt, I make new friends daily. Not to mention the beautiful campus, endless options for off campus living, the football games, the GREAT professors (I hated mine at Duquesne), etc. Oh, and let’s not forget how much better of a school Pitt is academically!

That’s why you should transfer. PS. I joined collegeconfidential just to tell you this.

Aw, thank you so much! I really appreciate your answer. It cleared alot of things up.(: I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who hates Duquesne… and for all the same reasons.
