Like hundreds of other parents and students, I have benefitted greatly from the information posted here, esp. from FC, jym, idad...and many others. I am wondering though why there appear to be so many attempts to disrupt the honest and open sharing of information on this site. Is this common on CC for all universities? I've looked at a few schools threads and haven't noticed this. Could it be due to the large # of solicited applications, leading to dashed hopes for so many potential students who then become irrate and vindictive? Your thoughts???

It is a bit of a mystery. Some other schools get this to one degree or another; WUSTL, Duke, Michigan, a few others. Others have speculated that Tulane gets it a bit more because people don’t get accepted that feel like they should (as opposed to say a Duke that has Ivy like selectivity), the poor reputation of New Orleans for crime, and/or the party representation of Tulane. And, as you say, the heavy marketing, although WUSTL, Chicago and many others do very heavy mailings as well.

Frankly I don’t know why, and I have grown to care less and less. I will simply continue to correct their fallacious assertions so that newbies to the site are not misled, and leave it at that. Some 17 year old students act like they are in their 20’s, some like they are in grade school. Not much to be done about it.

Thanks for the nice words, onceburnt. Its a pleasure to help out potential future undergrads.

For those of us who have been around this forum for a long time, we have seen ■■■■■■ pop up all over the place. There was one poster who would episodically emerge on the engineering forum with the same exact diatribe about why not to become an engineer and how awful it is to be an engineer. Not sure if or why they single out any particular school, and we have to wonder if sometimes it is the same person who comes back under a new name to cause a bit of trouble (which was why antennae initially went up with a recent new poster).

Wash U got a lot of flack for its tree-killing mass mailing ad/marketing campaign a few years back, and U Chicago got chastized for the posting of a rather risque essay last year. U Chicago gets a lot of heated debate on these boards too. This is just my opinion, but if a school does something that may be a bit out of the norm, and which engenders strong opinion, it is ripe for comment. Tulane’s marketing, free app and personal app/hear back quickly approach has its fans and its detractors, but it works for Tulane. Tulane and NOLA are unique in many ways. Pres Cowen mentions this in his presentations. It can attract commentary because of its uniqueness. So, whether the comments are made about the crime in urban cities or the boring aspects of college towns in the middle of nowhere where the excitement is going to the local Wal Mart , people will comment.

And sometimes its fun to comment back ;)

LOL, cross-posted with FC. No surprise there :)

It’s probably one or two people coming back under different names. This, or it’s become a joke of sorts in some extended group at Tulane, and they’re just having fun.

That being said, some “■■■■■■” are questionable. A few posters look like they’ve been making satires, which are quite funny, and that’s not really ■■■■■■■■. The same goes for seemingly legitimate posts with the “red flags” of ■■■■■■■■.

I have seen many ■■■■■■ on many CC college sites. It usually runs in cycles with short periods of attempted torment followed by longer periods of reasoned discourse. I have been very impressed with Tulane’s forum; it has an air of fun about it that is often absent on some other forums. The discussions of food, NOLA, dorms, etc. are typically good natured and really speak to a sense of community. ■■■■■■ or no ■■■■■■ I don’t see this changing.
