Why Stanford?

lol yeah I put mascot/symbol, cause the post above me referred to it as mascot but I thought of it as more of a "symbol" (of what I don't know for sure).............I was just talking with people about this too.
It's much easier to visualize than a cardinal, in our defense. lol

lol that's right!
I remember it now... (my friend has a shirt that has the mascot on it)
it is cardinal!!!

We are the "Stanford Cardinal" but our mascot is the Tree. It's more than just the band... because the Tree is at all the important athletic events- and if the Tree hadn't done something stupid a couple years ago he would be allowed to dress up and do his thing in NCAA play. And the symbol for stanford sports is the big red S with a tree through the middle.

Actually, one of the Stanford admissions rep who gave a presentation at my school said the mascot was the COLOR Cardinal. Not the bird cardinal...odd eh?
I'm also concerned about the drinking thing...I know nobody will make me drink, but I don't wanna be a loner. =[. Luckily, I now know at least one other person will be with me!

lol we should have CCer non-drinking parties. Actually, maybe we should seriously consider that library thing...........

"and if the Tree hadn't done something stupid a couple years ago he would be allowed to dress up and do his thing in NCAA play."

LOL, what'd he do?

lol seriously ^^
haha the tree!??!

Don't worry about not drinking; I think I read that about half of the people here don't drink. And even more freshmen don't, either. There's plenty of things to do if you don't drink. And even if you do find yourself at the really big frat parties on friday and saturday nights, you don't need alcohol to dance and act stupid, right?

thanks for the info. I'm relieved :):)!!
haha ya, I can dance badly and act stupid already :p

ya know, the cardinal may be the official mascot, but the tree is the unofficial one that everyone says is the real mascot. just check out wikipedia. actually, im not sure if stanford offically has any mascot. i dont even think officially cardinal is the mascot. i dunno its at wikipedia.

is good financial aid a factor?
or does stanford give little money?

duuude! Stanford has one of the BEST financial Aid programs....need based. You make under 40k and its a free 4 year ride!

I've heard some schools do the same for anything up to 65k, not that I'm saying Stanford's fin aid is bad.

What kind of FindAid can you expect for an income of 70k?

I would join in the non-drinking thing. it's nice to know there are others out there!

Again, there are plenty of things to do if you don't drink. I do choose to drink, but have only done so about every 3rd weekend. My dry weekends are just as fun. And there's pretty much no pressure to drink.

Bah, I read that on wikipedia. I was outraged, but too lazy to do anything about it. The official Stanford mascot is the Cardinal. From 1930 - 1972 it was the Stanford Indians, but we willingly changed it to be politically correct (unlike some schools, who are at least 30 years behind...). The Band's mascot is the tree, but it's not official. Also, it's not too widely accepted. You never hear "Go Trees!" at a football game.

The Cardinal mascot is an allegory, it symbolizes the creation of Stanford itself...it is only fitting to use the tree...haha as strange as it may seem, it had and great meaning to the founders, and will continue to be a valid representation for the University.

Trixee :)

i have a question about the location..ive visited stanford but im from ny and dont know the area too well..is it far from the beach? my username gives away my love for surfing..are the ways of getting to the beach on a regular basis..

it's not far from the beach, i'd imagine it being anywhere less than an hour to get there...

of course, if you're looking for a good beach, santa cruz right down the road provides that. santa cruz and i think santa clara. sorry, i get all my santa's confused, im from southern california

i might be biased, but i dont think the beaches up north have anything on the beaches down in southern CA. santa cruz is no huntington beach, it's no laguna beach or corona del mar

We have a 70k income and got no finaid. but our house + property is worth like a million cause our farm is so big and values have gone up. There are calculator things on the net you can do to get an estimate. Google it I guess.

yea..nocal has nothing socal in the way of beaches for sure..i wish stanford was a little more south
