Why Stony Brook?

I'm thinking of applying to Stony Brook, I was wondering if anyone who already goes there, or has visited it could tell me about it or why they like it? Or even others who are applying this year, why they want to go?

Yeah, I have the same question. Over half of the people in my school are applying to Stony as a safety (and most get in) but I’m also considering if I should apply to it too.
I hear it’s really good for the medical field/sciences.

By the way, is it better to apply using the SUNY app or the Commonapp?

Yeah me too. Well I’m not going into either of those areas
Hmmm, I’m not really sure but I used the common app.

Personally, I pretty much hated Stony Brook when I visited…so much so that I didn’t even apply. It’s far away from everything, and not very pretty.

i agree with the poster above me. i visited stony brook but hated it so much that i didn’t even bother to apply as well. the academics are probably very good but the campus sucks.

the campus visit and info session there were just awful, especially compared to other colleges that I have visited. the man giving the info session didnt seem to know what he was talking about and IMO was just plain annoying. they tour wasnt good either. there were so many people on the tour that it was impossible to see anything or hear anything that the THREE tour guides were saying. if there were three tour guides then why couldnt they have divided us into three groups?

also, they claim to have a lot of diversity but from what i could see visiting campus, there was absolutely no integration between different ethnic groups. additionally, the dorms there are very crowded and most likely when you are a freshman you will be tripled and they dont even put an extra desk and dresser in the room.

gah i could ramble on and on. maybe its just not the college for me but would suit you well, who knows…
oh also, before I visited the campus i had a good impression of the college from just reading the website. this totally changed when i visited so I would suggest that you visit if you have not already in order to see if this college is right for you.

Wow, the above comment makes me nervous. I am considering on applying to Stony Brook. I have not yet found the time to visit it because of where I live.

But if you could tell me more, that would be great.

im sorry for making you nervous about it. it could just be me, maybe everyone else there loves it. what other colleges are you looking at? if you want a big university then have you looked at albany, buffalo, and binghamton? I havent visited buffalo or binghamton but i did visit albany and i had a much better impression of it even though i dont really want to go to a big university.
oh also, have you checked out students review . com?(remove the spaces) if not then take a look at it for some colleges that you may be looking at, stony brook included.

Oh my god (I’m glad I found this thread)

Hi, I’m a sophmore at stony brook. I’ve been wanting/waiting to transfer since DAY ONE. I am a hard science major, true, but the school is still pretty bad regardless. No complaints about bio/chem departments, but they’re very impersonal. Well respected however.

If you plan on commuting, the school can be okay since the price is so good, but I highly advise you to read reviews about stony. The social life is quite bad here. It’s very difficult to find a quality girlfriend here (everyone’s biggest gripe)
