I am a senior who applied to Stony Brook because of a friend who goes there in NY. Now that I got accepted, I don't know too much about it.

Already read their site and books etc., but I want a more "word of mouth" opinion. Any help? My friend kinda has a biased opinion.

I've got the same question. I'm considering going there for Bio / Pre-Med, which I know is their strongest program.

I'm having a hard time finding info on it because it's not a popular school. Anyone on here know anything?

i dont really like the campus

yeah, that the only thing i do know about it- bio/pre-med is most the most popular there

I live in NYC so it's not too far.

It's one of the better SUNY's. That said, SUNY's are safeties all the way, they are not that good school, although the Honors program at Stony Brook is great, expect ot be surrounded by NY'ers upset that they didn't get into their top choice schools and are stuck at their safety.

My boyfriend TA's there...

It's very much a commuter school with a dead campus on the weekends. Most people head into the city, but it's not as easy to get there without a car (LIRR station on campus is on the slow line).

Not a pretty campus and takes forever to get around. Library didn't look that large either... but I only saw a little bit of it.

I've heard good things about sciences, less about humanities. I've gotten the impression in humanites is that it is not a challenging school. They don't really seem to expect that much of you, but that's what i've gotten from seeing undergrad papers...

it really sucks, people go there because they thats the best school they got into.

...bump^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

which ones better for bio/pre-med:

Stony Brook
Florida State
University of south florida

i know that fsu's program is new

Because of the weird way the (London) Times Higher Ed. supplement ranks schools (look further on the thread). Notice how Dartmouth is not even in the top 50.

I live on Long Island, I know Stony Brook well. My friend is devastated because it was his only safety and he was rejected from his reach, match schools (although he's got like a 3.8, 1500, great EC's) so he has to decide whether to take a year off and re-apply or go to Stony (honors) and transfer after a year.
