I'm a business/econ major. If I go to ucsb I'll do econ and if I go to San diego state I'll do business. I know UCs have more prestige but I'm looking for the best program available between these two. Does anybody know anything about this?

I would choose UCSB. From personal experience in the corporate world, businesses such as banks tend to hire prestigous universities rather than lower tier colleges. Sure UCSB has business economics which may not seem ideal but it’s certainly better than SDSU in a lot of ways.

It comes down to a little more than that…

If you’re a great student, and SDSU would be a downgrade for you then you’ll most likely be able to get a higher GPA at SDSU, which would make it an ideal choice if you are looking at graduate school.

At the same time, there’s 35,000 students here at SDSU and so sometimes finding unique opportunities can be a little bit harder (not that it’s hard at all, just comparatively) than what I would assume UCSB is with a smaller student body.

Finally, they’re definitely close enough that what I would look at most is which you prefer, which would you do better at? I know most people shrug it off and go for the prestige, but I’ve found that it’s 100% true… wherever you’re happier to be working at, you’ll do better work there.

Check out both schools and see which vibe you like better, both are some of the most beautiful campuses in california so you can’t really go wrong… but I noticed that Santa Barbara is a much slower pace than San Diego (although both are very laid back Southern California cities… I lived in Santa Barbara for several years, which is why I chose SDSU over UCSB, and I’m also a business major). While San Diego has less beautiful trees and nature than Santa Barbara.

If you go to both and feel drawn to one more than the other, then choose that one! Coming out of undergraduate with no connections to follow up to a job is a worst case scenario, you’d be much much better off going somewhere that you can get really involved and end up meeting people that lead to a great job.

SDstateguy, aren’t you the one trying to transfer to an ivy?

Aja, in business, school matters much more than major. And while GPA is important, it’s irrelevant if the employer doesn’t recruit at the school you go to.

Go to the very best school you can get into.

all i know is that UC Santa Barbara has some of the sickest Halloween parties hands down.
and i’m from the east coast. Now that’s saying something.

thank you all for your input!
