Hi guys,
So I'm planning on going into biomedical engineering as an undergrad then to grad school for the same thing. I've toured UTK and recently got the 10000 out-of-state excellence award, and both are good incentives to go to Tennessee.

But I would love to know more, maybe from an insider's perspective. Really any comment can help me make a decision, because I'm also looking into Louisville, SLU, and Florida Tech. Any two cents to help me out? :)
Thanks!

I know this is a delayed response, but I haven’t been on CC for awhile. My older brother is graduating from the University of Tennessee in May. He absolutely loved it there. I was hoping to go there as well, but they do not have my major any longer. The biomedical engineering program is excellent. The facilities are amazing. He was not in that field, but he had the most amazing opportunities while he was there. That sounds like a great deal with the scholarship money they are offering you. In general it seems that they are much more generous with the out-of-state applicants than those in-state.
I can tell you that none of the other schools can compare to Knoxville as far as the campus. It is very “hilly” though, but I am sure you know that from your visit. I have been to several football games and they really are amazing, if you are interested in that at all. A family friend from West Virginia came to UTK to study architecture and he loved it.

We were at the UTK Chancellor’ Honors Program reception yesterday and again I got heartburn over the Big Orange Screw. Yes, D has got the Volunteer in-state ($6K) scholarship which when combined with the Hope/GAMs ($5K) is significant for in-state. Still, it is annoying if not embarrassing to have the CHP director display her first slide with a misspelled word (principal/principle). She could not answer basic stat-based questions about the program: what’s the attrition rate, how many get research grants, how many go to grad school, professional school, work. The admissions rep showed two YouTube commercials from the Olympics. I am not kidding. Then the housing rep announced that they’ve got honors housing for 75% of the CHP freshmen students (300) in the new dorm. I detest UT.

It’s seriously top-heavy and undergrads are not the focus. However, if you’re in the CHP, you will have access and attention not available to the rest of the undergrad community. The College of Engineering is good.
